The most famous story, first published in a collection called Break of Dark, is titled Blackham's Wimpy, the name of a Vickers Wellington Bomber featured in the story, whose nickname comes from the character J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye comics and cartoons ( the Wellington was named for Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, victor over Napoleon ).

J. Wellington Wimpy, generally referred to as Wimpy, is one of the characters in the long-running comic strip Popeye, created by E. C. Segar and originally called Thimble Theatre, and in the Popeye cartoons based upon the strip.

Wimpy is Popeye's friend.

Wimpy is also the inspiration and name of the large chain of Wimpy hamburger restaurants which was founded in Chicago in the 1930s and opened in the UK in 1954 ; it has maintained operations overseas since 1967.

Their UK website states, " The name Wimpy is believed to have come from Popeye ’ s friend J Wellington Wimpy who loved hamburgers as much as Popeye loved spinach.

* In the Good Eats second season episode " Daily Grind " ( aka " A Grind is a Terrible Thing to Waste "), Alton Brown prepares the " perfect burger " ( as well as meatloaf & meatballs ) for a character named " J. Wellington Whimpy " ( purposely misspelled, but looking mostly like the version of Wimpy played by Paul Dooley in the Popeye film ) played by then cast regular Steve Rooney.

* In the final Pooch the Pup cartoon called She Done Him Right, a dog character looking like Wimpy is seen playing a slot machine.

* In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the main character, Greg Heffley, is given a Big Wheel for Christmas by his friend Rowley.

In the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series there is a comic the main character despises called " L ' il Cutie " which shares similarities to Family Circus.

The cover of a typical Tijuana bible, this one features J. Wellington Wimpy | Wimpy, and is drawn in the style of the anonymous " Mr. Prolific.

* Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw: Greg Heffley mentions he has no money for snacks since he ordered several products from his comic books, one of which is a hoverboard ( really just instructions to build one, with Greg getting stuck on the first step, acquiring an industrial-strength twin-turbine engine ).

While the town is celebrating Popeye's victory, Wimpy steals Swee ' Pea and gives him to Bluto.

Olive and Wimpy learn that Swee ' Pea was taken on the Commodore's ship, and it turns out that the Commodore is Popeye's father, Poopdeck Pappy ( Ray Walston ).

When Olive and Wimpy tell Popeye what they have discovered, Popeye thinks it is a joke and goes to the Commodore's ship to prove them wrong.

A popular feature of FunBrain. com is the continuous story Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which was published as a novel in April 2007.

In this short, Sindbad the Sailor ( presumably Bluto playing a " role ") proclaims himself the greatest sailor in the world and " the most remarkable, extraordinary fellow ," a claim which is challenged by Popeye's arrival on his island with Olive Oyl and J. Wellington Wimpy in tow.

The Burger Company ( which replaced the former Wimpy ) is being replaced with this franchised outlet which aims to provide McDonald's well known food at high street prices.

The Goonies II can be seen being played also in the movies Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days by Greg Heffley, Rowley Jefferson, and Rodrick Heffley.
