Tridgell was a major developer of the Samba software, analysing the Server Message Block protocol used for workgroup and network file sharing by Microsoft Windows products.

It is included in most Windows Server operating systems.

Then Windows 2000 Server edition, and revised to extend functionality and improve administration in Windows Server 2003.

Additional improvements were made in Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and with the release of the latter the domain controller role was renamed Active Directory Domain Services.

Microsoft announced that they have discontinued the separate release of WinFS for Windows XP and Windows Vista and will gradually incorporate the technologies developed for WinFS in other products and technologies, notably Microsoft SQL Server.

Amongst Windows 2000's most significant new features was Active Directory, a near-complete replacement of the NT 4. 0 Windows Server domain model, which built on industry-standard technologies like DNS, LDAP, and Kerberos to connect machines to one another.

Windows XP SP1 was released in September 2002, SP2 came out in August 2004 and SP3 came out in April 2008.

Windows Server 2008, released on 27 February 2008, was originally known as Windows Server Codename " Longhorn ".

Irssi builds and runs on Microsoft Windows under Cygwin, and in 2006, an official Windows standalone build became available.

Linux and Windows builds had been released since the beginning, with Solaris support dropping off with version 3. 1. 1, and HP-UX dropping off with version 4. 1. 2 after spotty support.

It has specific builds for a variety of operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, IRIX, and Solaris.

As for the third key Microsoft claimed it was only in beta builds of Windows 2000 and that its purpose was for signing Cryptographic Service Providers.

It builds and works identically on several platforms, including Solaris, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Darwin, HPUX, IRIX, AIX, Tru64, Linux, UnixWare, HURD, Windows, Symbian, Amiga, OS / 2, BeOS, Mac OS X, Ultrix, QNX, BlackBerry Tablet OS, OpenVMS, RISC OS, Novell NetWare, DOS and more.

The Windows Installer XML ( WiX, pronounced " wicks "), is a free software toolset that builds Windows Installer ( MSI ) packages from an XML document.

For Microsoft, especially during the development stage, all employees across the corporation have access to daily Software builds of most products in development, including the Windows operating system.

Unlike other media center applications like Windows Media Center, MediaPortal and MythTV, XBMC Media Center does not yet include native Live TV or DVR / PVR recording functionality, nor an EPG TV-Guide interface of its own, it does however offer the possibility to integrate such functionality through third-party plugins and an official native unified DVR / PVR front-end with EPG which via a common API will support multiple back-ends via PVR client add-ons is under development, with experimental builds already available.

As of version 0. 97. 5 ClamAV builds and runs on Microsoft Windows.

Both releases held Windows Explorer builds of 3. 51. 1053. 1.

* Designed from the ground up for cross-platform builds, and known to work on POSIX systems ( including Linux, AIX, * BSD types, HP-UX, IRIX, Solaris ), Windows NT, OS X, and OS / 2.

Note: the EchoLink software, which is designed to run on Microsoft Windows, has also been known to work on several Linux builds as well if loaded through Wine.

The QCad Community Edition, which lacks functionality present in the full version, is released under the GNU General Public License and is not ( officially ) available for MS Windows, though unofficial builds do exist.

Early builds of Windows 8 feature a black screen of death, in place of the traditional blue screen, that appears to indicate a Stop error.

A Windows Presentation Foundation ( WPF ) version of Windows Movie Maker was also included in some builds of Windows " Longhorn " ( now Windows Vista ), but was removed in the development reset in August 2004.
