Avon Fantasy Reader No. 10, edited by Donald Wollheim

In 1945 Wollheim edited the first hardcover anthology from a major publisher and the first omnibus, The Viking Portable Novels of Science.

With the help of Arthur W. Saha, Wollheim also edited and published the popular " Annual World's Best Science Fiction " anthology from 1971 until his death.

At one point in the earliest 1940s, approximately half of all the pulp sf and fantasy magazines in the U. S. were being edited by Futurians: Frederik Pohl at the Popular Publications offshoot Fictioneers, Inc. ( Astonishing Stories and Super-Science Stories ); Robert Lowndes at Columbia Publications, most notably with Science Fiction and Future Fiction ( though through the decade to come, Lowndes's responsibilities would expand to other types of fiction magazine in the chain ), and Donald Wollheim at the very marginal Albing Publications with the short-lived, micro-budgeted Cosmic Stories and Stirring Science Stories ( Wollheim soon moved on to Avon Books ; Doë " Leslie Perri " Baumgardt also worked on a romance fiction title for Albing ).

The 1979 Encyclopedia of Science Fiction calls Wollheim " one of the first and most vociferous sf fans.

Wollheim organized the first science fiction convention.

When payment was not forthcoming for the first story he sold to Gernsback, Wollheim formed a group with several other authors, and successfully sued for payment.

In 1937 Wollheim founded the Fantasy Amateur Press Association, whose first mailing ( July 1937 ) included this statement from Wollheim: " There are many fans desiring to put out a voice who dare not, for fear of being obliged to keep it up, and for the worry and time taken by subscriptions and advertising.

Then Wollheim changed everything when he brought out an unauthorized paperback edition of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings in three volumes — the first mass-market paperback edition of Tolkien's epic.

Wollheim made an offer for Jordan's first novel, Warriors of the Ataii, though he withdrew the offer when Jordan requested some minor changes to the contract.

Preceded by Mutual's 2000 Plus ( 1950 – 52 ), Dimension X was not the first adult science fiction series on radio, but the acquisition of previously published stories immediately gave it a strong standing with the science fiction community, as did the choice of well established, respected writers in the field: Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, Fredric Brown, Robert A. Heinlein, Murray Leinster, H. Beam Piper, Frank M. Robinson, Clifford D. Simak, William Tenn, Jack Vance, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Williamson and Donald A. Wollheim.

In addition to its groundbreaking role as the first of its kind, the convention was noteworthy for the exclusion of a number of politicized Futurians ( those excluded were Wollheim, Pohl, John Michel, Robert A. W. Lowndes and Jack Gillespie ) by convention chair Moskowitz, an event known to fannish historians as " The Great Exclusion Act.

The phrase appears to have first been coined in the 1960s by Donald A. Wollheim, editor of Ace Books, and later of DAW Books at a time when the genre was undergoing a revival.

Donald Allen Wollheim ( 1 October 1914 – 2 November 1990 ) was an American science fiction ( sf ) editor, publisher, writer, and fan.

Wollheim was a member of the New York Science Fiction League, one of the clubs established by Hugo Gernsback to promote science fiction.

Robert Silverberg said that Donald Wollheim was " one of the most significant figures in 20th century American science fiction publishing ", adding, " A plausible case could be made that he was the most significant figure — responsible in large measure for the development of the science fiction paperback, the science fiction anthology, and the whole post-Tolkien boom in fantasy fiction.

At the time the Futurians were formed, Donald Wollheim was strongly attracted by communism and believed that followers of science fiction " should actively work for the realization of the scientific world-state as the only genuine justification for their activities and existence ".

It was to this end that Wollheim formed the Futurians, and many of its members were in some degree interested in the political applications of science fiction.

DAW Books is an American science fiction and fantasy publisher, founded by Donald A. Wollheim following his departure from Ace Books in 1971.

In its early years under the leadership of Wollheim and his wife Elsie, DAW gained a reputation of publishing popular though not always critically acclaimed works of science fiction and fantasy.

In the late 1930s, John W. Campbell became editor of Astounding Science Fiction, and a critical mass of new writers emerged in New York City in a group called the Futurians, including Isaac Asimov, Damon Knight, Donald A. Wollheim, Frederik Pohl, James Blish, Judith Merril, and others.

The feud theory was originally set forth in a fan press article, " The Kline-Burroughs War ," by Donald A. Wollheim ( Science Fiction News, November, 1936 ), and afterward given wider circulation by Sam Moskowitz in his book Explorers of the Infinite.

In 1943 Wollheim married fellow Futurian Elsie Balter ( 1910 – 1996 ).
