The scholar Kenneth Billingsley found that Trumbo wrote The Daily Worker about films which he said communist influence in Hollywood had prevented from being made: among them were proposed adaptations of Arthur Koestler's anti-totalitarian works Darkness at Noon and The Yogi and the Commissar, which described the rise of communism in Russia.

On the other hand, prominent distributists such as Dorothy Day and those involved in the Catholic Worker movement were / are strict pacifists even to the point of condemning involvement in the Second World War at much personal cost.

In The Worker ( ATV / ITV ) he played a perpetually unemployed labourer who, in every episode, was dispatched to a new job by the ever-frustrated Mr. Pugh ( Henry McGee ) at the local labour exchange.

During the war Ovington supported Asa Philip Randolph and his magazine, The Messenger ( later the Black Worker ), which campaigned for black civil rights.

Alice Walker, the author of The Color Purple, wrote: " One shining example of criticism by a black man with love is the review of The Color Purple, the movie, by Carl Dix that appeared in the Revolutionary Worker.

He published articles and edited the Negro Worker, a journal devoted to uniting black workers around the world.

A Scottish edition of the Daily Worker was produced from its plant in Glasgow starting on 11 November 1940.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, better known by its acronym as the WARN Act, requires private sector employers to give sixty days ' notice of large-scale layoffs and plant closures ; it allows a number of exceptions for unforeseen emergencies and other cases.

On December 5, 2008, members of UE Local 1110 at Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago, when the plant closed with only three days notice to the employees, occupied the plant in protest of the closing and company's failure to pay employees their accrued vacation pay, and payments required under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
