Hayes returned to active competition in 1999 for Power Pro Wrestling, where he won the promotion's title.

In early 1982, the Fabulous Freebirds, consisting of Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts, left Georgia Championship Wrestling after meeting WCCW booker Gary Hart at a show.

As explained in The Triumph and Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling DVD, the storyline, developed by Gary Hart, was written as Hayes having been selected by fans to be a special enforcer type of referee in the match.

The Freebirds were last together when Hayes, Gordy, and Garvin worked for the Global Wrestling Federation in 1994, ending the group after 15 years.

< small >< sup > 1 </ sup > Hayes ' reign as NWA United States Heavyweight Champion occurred after Ted Turner purchased Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling from Jim Crockett, Jr. in 1988, which resulted in renaming the promotion World Championship Wrestling.

In 1989, Gordy helped Hayes reform the Freebirds, with Jimmy Garvin, in Jim Crockett Promotions ( which would become World Championship Wrestling in 1991.

In 1994, Gordy had a small reunion with Hayes and Garvin as the Freebirds in the Global Wrestling Federation where he won the GWF Tag Team Titles with Garvin.

They had some minor feuds and then Garvin left WCW in September 1992 and went to the Global Wrestling Federation, where he reformed the Freebirds with Terry Gordy and Hayes.

On March 18 edition of World Championship Wrestling, Luger and Michael Hayes competed against Barry and Kendall Windham in a tag team match, during which Hayes turned on Luger and helped the Windhams in winning the match.
