In the DVD commentary for the episode " Dirty Girls ", writer Drew Goddard mentions there was talk of killing off Xander towards the end of Season Seven and having the First Evil assume Xander's appearance when conversing with Buffy for the remainder of the season.

Willow, Xander, Anya and Tara talk about calling Buffy back from Heaven and their feelings in the aftermath of the truth.

Willow runs into Xander in the kitchen and offers the final " best man " talk then leaves him to practice his vows.

" While the dead boys are getting the supplies by breaking into a hardware store, Xander spots Willow leaving the magic shop and tries to talk to her, but she hurries off to go help Buffy.

After a few seconds of talk, Xander decides to keep his harrowing night to himself aware that his friends will never believe such a story no matter how he tells it.
