Yin and yang are ancient Chinese concepts which can be traced back to the Shang dynasty ( 1600 – 1100 BC ).

Yin and yang is also discussed in Confucianism, but to a lesser extent.

* In Chinese painting, the color violet represents the harmony of the universe because it is a combination of red and blue ( Yin and yang respectively ).

Yin and yang are not opposing forces ( dualities ), but complementary forces, unseen ( hidden, feminine ) and seen ( manifest, masculine ), that interact to form a greater whole, as part of a dynamic system.

Yin and yang thus are always opposite and equal qualities.

Yin and yang transform each other: like an undertow in the ocean, every advance is complemented by a retreat, and every rise transforms into a fall.

Yin ( literally the ' shady place ' or ' north slope ') is the dark area occluded by the mountain's bulk, while yang ( literally the ' sunny place ' or ' south slope ') is the brightly lit portion.

In Chinese philosophy Yin is the complementary feminine part of the Taijitu and is represented by a dark lobe.

According to relatively late ( 19th century ) documents preserved within the Yang and Wu family's archives, the name of Zhang Sanfeng's master was Xu Xuanping ( 許宣平 ), said to be a Tang dynasty hermit poet and Taoist Tao Yin expert.

Yin, Yang, and the five elements are associated with themes in the I Ching, the oldest of Chinese classical texts which describes an ancient system of cosmology and philosophy.
