Yonten Gyatso or Yon-tan-rgya-mtsho ( 1589 – 1617 ) was the 4th Dalai Lama, born in Mongolia on the 30th day of the 12th month of the Earth-Ox year of the Tibetan calendar.

As the son of the chieftain of the Chokur tribe, Tsultrim Choeje, and great-grandson of Altan Khan of the Tümed Mongols and his second wife PhaKhen Nula, Yonten Gyatso was a Mongolian, making him the only non-Tibetan to be recognized as Dalai Lama other than the 6th Dalai Lama, who was a Monpa — but Monpas can be seen either as a Tibetan subgroup or a closely related people.

Yonten Gyatso became the abbot of Drepung and, later, Sera monasteries.

When he was twenty-one warriors attacked Drepung monastery and Yonten Gyatso had to flee.

Gendun Gyatso Palzangpo (), also Gendun Gyatso (" Sublimely Glorious Ocean of Spiritual Aspirants ", layname: Yonten Phuntsok ) ( 1475 – 1542 ) was the second Dalai Lama.

It was founded by Namnang Dorje in the 13th-14th centuries, and reconstituted in the late 19th century by Dro-ge Yonten Gyatso.

Yonten Phuntsok, an old and famous Tibetan medical doctor, who was himself a student of the even more famous Jamgon Kontrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche.

He received teachings from the tutor of Lobsang Yeshi, the Abbot of Gyumey Monastery and also from the Abbot of Shalu Monastery, Ngawang Yonten on all the major Buddhist philosophical treatises and became a master in both sutra and tantra.

Volume 24 contains his commentary on Jigme Lingpa's Yonten Dzöd and a three-part original exposition of Great Perfection, the Trilogy of Fundamental Mind.

Tokden Yonten Gonpo, worshipped this deity first and on divine injunction initiated his son Kunkhepa, to follow this tradition.

A cluster of buildings to the left of the entrance gate is the Kelsang Phodang ( The full name of this palace is " bskal bzang bde skyid pho brang "), named after the 7th Dalai Lama, Kelsang Gyatso ( 1708 – 1757 ).

However, Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, is no longer calling for independence.

Although Lozang Gyatso, the 5th Dalai Lama, had died in 1682, the Regent Desi Sangye Gyatso ( Sangs-rgyas rgya-mtsho ) kept his death a secret-partly to continue the stable administration, and partly to gain time for the completion of the Potala.
