The Light Rail possesses many characteristics of a tramway, including running on streets with other traffic ( at grades ) on some of its tracks and providing services for the public in New Territories West, including Tuen Mun and Yuen Long.

Shek Kong Airfield, located near Yuen Long, is a military airfield for the People's Liberation Army, which is of limited operating capabilities due to surrounding terrains.

The MTR Corporation came under fire in June 2011 after their work on the cross-border high-speed railway line encroached on a conservation area in Pat Heung, Yuen Long.

Golden Beach is served by KMB bus routes 52x ( Tuen Mun Central Bus Terminus ↔ Mongkok ), 53 ( Yuen Long ↔ Tsuen Wan ) and 61M ( Tuen Mun Central Bus Terminus ↔ Kwai Fong );

In May 2007, citing concern over developments in West Kowloon, and near Tai Wai Yuen Long railway stations, some legislators called for a law to stop developers from constructing tall buildings which adversely affect air flow in densely populated areas, but the bid failed.

Unlike the MTR, the KCR does not provide a concessionary fare for students, although there is a student discount system available for students who live in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai.

Two routes were suggested for the British Section, a western route of about from the tip of Kowloon peninsula via Tsuen Wan to Castle Peak Bay and thence to Yuen Long and the border with China, and a more direct eastern route of about requiring tunnelling through the Kowloon hills and thence to the border via Tide Cove ( now Sha Tin area ), Tai Po, Fanling and Sheung Shui.

It accepted an invitation from the government to build and operate a light rail network in the north western New Territories serving the local public transport needs of the future residents of the Tuen Mun and Yuen Long new towns.

The study finally also recommended the extension of the light railway system to the Yuen Long new town.

Yuen Long District (, Jyutping: jyun4 long5, pinyin: Yuánlǎng, used to be known as Un Long ), is one of the districts of Hong Kong located in the northwest of the New Territories.

Yuen Long District contains the largest alluvial plain in Hong Kong, the Yuen Long-Kam Tin plain.

With an area of 144 km², the district covers many traditional villages including Ping Shan Heung, Ha Tsuen Heung, Kam Tin Heung, Pat Heung, San Tin Heung and Shap Pat Heung, as well as Yuen Long Town and Tin Shui Wai.

Yuen Long New Town was developed from the traditional market town of Yuen Long Town from the late 1970s.
