Tucker returned to the band in late 1970, by which time Reed had left the group and Doug Yule had assumed leadership.
After completing the tour on November 21, 1971, in Groningen, the band planned to start recording a new album, but band manager Steve Sesnick sent all of the band but Yule home, presumably to retain maximum control of the product ( the resulting album was Squeeze, released in 1973 ) and effectively ending Alexander's time with the band.
The Velvet Underground, which at that time consisted of Doug Yule ( vocals / guitar ), Willie Alexander ( keyboards / vocals ), Walter Powers ( bass guitar ) and Maureen Tucker ( drums ), had toured the United Kingdom and the Netherlands in October and November 1971 to support its latest album, Loaded, which had been written and recorded when Lou Reed was in the band, and which had seen a European release in March 1970.
After singer, guitarist and main songwriter Lou Reed quit the Velvet Underground in August 1970, the band carried on: Doug Yule assumed leadership of the band and moved to lead vocals and guitar, and Walter Powers joined to play bass guitar.
However, band manager Steve Sesnick sent Alexander, Powers and Tucker back to America, and Yule recorded the album Squeeze backed by session musicians.
Yule and the band struggled through the dates, then called it quits.
The tour manager insisted on billing the band as being the Velvet Underground despite demands from Yule not to do so.
The band soldiered on with bassist Doug Yule moving to vocals and guitar and Walter Powers being drafted in to play bass guitar.
