Sun Ce then appointed his relatives and a trusted subject to govern Danyang and Yuzhang, from which he divided a new commandery named Luling ( 廬陵 ).

Some time after that, Zhou Tai followed Sun Ce to attack Liu Xun at Wan and Huang Zu of Jiangxia, and upon his return he passed by Yuzhang commandery and there he was granted the title of Chief of Yichun Prefecture as well.

As the largest commandery of Yangzhou ( 揚州 ), Yuzhang accounted for two fifths of the population and Gan gradually took shape during this period.

To compensate Xiao Tong's three sons, he created the princes of large commandery — Xiao Huan the Prince of Yuzhang, Xiao Yu ( 蕭譽 ) the Prince of Hedong, and Xiao Cha the Prince of Yueyang, but his grandsons continued to resent him.

After all the surrounding areas were taken over by Sun Ce, Liu Yao gave up the city and escaped south to Yuzhang ( 豫章 ; present-day Nanchang, Jiangxi ), where he would later die.

The main beneficiaries of this policy were those with access to copper, including the court official Deng Tong ( 鄧通 ) ( see also below ), to whom Emperor Wen had given a major copper mine in Yandao ( 嚴道, in modern Yaan, Sichuan ), and Liu Pi, the Prince of Wu, whose principality had a major copper mine at Yuzhang ( 豫章, in modern Nanchang, Jiangxi ).

Meanwhile, He Wuji led a fleet against Xu at Yuzhang ( 豫章, in modern Nanchang, Jiangxi ), but was defeated and killed by Xu.

Taishi Ci later was forced to break allegiance with Liu Yao after they fled their separate ways, with Liu Yao fleeing to Yuzhang ( 豫章 ) and Taishi Ci to Wuhu, resulting from Liu Yao's refusal to heed Taishi Ci's strategic advice and was subsequently overrun.

It was named after the Yuzhang River ( 豫章江, Gan: Ì-zong Kong ), the original name of Gan River.

In the early years of the Han Dynasty ( 202 BC ), Nanchang was established as the capital of the Yuzhang Commandery ( 豫章郡 ) ( this name stems from the original name of Gan River ), along with the 18 counties ( 縣 ) of Jiangxi Province.

Under the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Yuzhang Commandery was assigned to Yangzhou Province, as part of a trend to establish provinces ( zhou ) all across China.

Gelaohui ( Elder Brother society ) was another group, with Zhu De, Wu Yuzhang, Liu Zhidan ( 劉志丹 ) and Helong.

Sima Yong, in control of the situation, decided to directly take control without using Sima Ying any longer, and Sima Ying was removed from the crown prince position and replaced with another brother of Emperor Hui's -- Sima Chi the Prince of Yuzhang, who was considered studious and humble.

The second task assigned to Taishi Ci by Sun Ce was to perform a reconnaissance mission on Hua Xin, the Administrator of Yuzhang in the name of paying a visit.

In an earlier time, Jiang Qin was on guard at Xuancheng, and was out fighting the bandits at Yuzhang.

The second company was led by Commander Yang Pu and advanced from Yuzhang Commandery ( modern Nanchang ) through the Hengpu Pass and down the Zhen River.

The population of the Yuzhang Commandery increased to 1, 670, 000 ( by AD 140 ) from 350, 000 ( in AD 2 ), with a net growth of 1, 320, 000.

), the Prince of Yuzhang ( created 504 ), later changed name to Xiao Zan ( 蕭贊 ) and created Prince of Danyang by Northern Wei ( created 525, d. 530 )

Zhang Lan, social activist, educationist, and former Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Central Government, and Wu Yuzhang, revolutionary and educationist, were once the President of the university.

In the same year, Liu became acquainted with Yang Angong ( 杨闇公, the elder brother of Yang Shangkun ) and Wu Yuzhang ( 吴玉章 ), who were amongst the earliest Communists of Sichuan.

Taishi Ci returned and told Sun Ce that Hua Xin would not be able to defend his turf because the local people did not obey him, so Sun Ce marched his force to Yuzhang like Taishi Ci had suggested, and peacefully incorporated the region when Hua Xin surrendered.

Wu Yuzhang, Cheng Fangwu, Guo Yingqiu, Yuan Baohua, Huang Da, and Li Wenhai have successively held the presidential posts.

Many of his descendants reside in Beijing, including Jin Youzhi, Jin Yuzhang and Jin Yulan.

The Yuzhang Commandery ranked forth in population among the more than 100 contemporary commanderies of China.

As Officer of Merit in the commandery, he was also responsible for local appointments to office and recommendations to the capital of nominees for higher office.

A commandery consisted of a group of counties, and was headed by an Administrator.

He was the top civil and military leader of the commandery and handled defense, lawsuits, seasonal instructions to farmers and recommendations of nominees for office sent annually to the capital in a quota system first established by Emperor Wu.

The chanyu was ordered to establish his court in the Meiji district of Xihe commandery.

In 589, the Wuchang commandery was abolished and the Wuchang county was transferred to a new commandery named Ezhou ( headquartered in present day Wuchang District ), and remained in the administration since then.

The Wuchang commandery was set up when È was renamed to Wuchang, and included six counties.

In 223 the commandery was renamed to Jiangxia, and the capital of the commandery moved to Xiakou ( in present day Wuchang town ).

The commandery seat was at Dianchi county ( present day Jinning 晋宁 ).

A Templar commandery was eventually built at Payns.

Since Lelang became too large for a commandery, the Defender of the Southern Section ( 南部都尉 ) was set up to rule the seven prefectures which formerly belonged to Zhenfan.

Overlooking Luoyang on Mount Huanyuan was the Cypress Valley Estate, which had served as the site of a fort during the Jin and a commandery during the Southern Qi.

The commandery (), also known as prefecture, was a historical administrative division of China from the time of the Zhou Dynasty ( 1046 – 256 BCE ) until the early Tang Dynasty ( 618 – 907CE ).

Each of the warring states ' territories was by now comparatively large with no need for the military might of a commandery in the interior where counties were established.

When the Qin Dynasty was replaced by the Western Han in 206 BCE, the system of enfeoffment was to a degree reinstated with all existing commanderies effectively becoming vassal states although the two tier commandery and county system remained in effect.

This was the last time that the word " commandery " was used for an administrative division.

The Daifang commandery was inherited by the Jin Dynasty.
