The character, both a stage magician and a real magician like her father Giovanni " John " Zatara, is known for her involvement with the Justice League, her retconned childhood association with Batman, and her crossing of the Vertigo line with characters such as romantic partner John Constantine and protégé Timothy Hunter.

Zatanna is the daughter of magician Giovanni Zatara ( who appeared in Golden Age comic books ) and Sindella, a member of the mystical Homo magi race.

Her younger cousin, the teenager Zachary Zatara, is also a magician in the DCU.

Zatara trained Bruce Wayne in the art of escape ; and Bruce and Zatanna were childhood friends ( although Batman believes that he has never met in her Justice League of America # 51, and her only memory of meeting him is while she was disguised ).

In the Amalgam Comics universe, Zatanna is merged with Scarlet Witch of the Avengers to form a character known as Wanda Zatara, the White Witch.

In the alternate timeline of the Flashpoint event, Zatanna is a member of the Secret Seven and also is a member of a motorcycle gang, her father Giovanni " John " Zatara was transformed into a motorcycle when Zatanna is riding on him.

She is described as the daughter of the deceased John Zatara, " the world's greatest magician ".

Once she acquires the Book of Zatara from Green Arrow, whom she recognizes as Oliver, she reveals her aim is to use it to resurrect her father.

John Zatara is introduced as a magician in various publications of DC Comics, beginning with 1938's Action Comics # 1, which also contains the first appearance of Superman.

Because Constantine had previously taken Zatanna to a " tantric studies meeting ," Zatara will not let Zatanna out of his sight with Constantine present, and by his very presence, is forced to take part in the seance to which he was not invited.

In the Reign of Hell mini-series, Zatara is part of a general resistance movement operating in Hell.

This Zatara is the son of Zatanna and magician John Constantine, which makes him the grandson of the original.

He does express his opinion not to add Zatanna to the Justice League yet with Wonder Woman claiming that Zatara is still stating this from within the Helm of Nabu.

Fate is still a member of the Justice League ( presumably with Zatara still as the host ).

* Zatara is shown in a crossover comic in Batman Adventures with Superman Adventures.

This is also the case with Action Comics # 1, which contained the first appearances of Zatara and Tex Thomson, as well as Superman.

In the storyline, New Justice League member Zatanna, is searching for her mother Sindella, along with her father Giovanni Zatara.

The comics also show a flashback of a teenage Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent both seeking magic lessons from Zatara, although neither come into contact with each other, but both use the pseudonym " John Smith ".

This ritual also kills Zatara and leaves Mento completely deranged.

He was also the assassin who attempted to kill Jack Knight in the final issue of Starman ( and nearly killed Mason O ' Dare, if not for the timely intervention of the spirit of the deceased magician Zatara ).

They also meet several other former Titans, such as Red Star, Zatara, and Bombshell.

Kid Devil and Zachary Zatara also discuss a trip to New Azarath in which the latter was nearly eaten by the Phantasm.

Zatara realized that he could command it to stop by giving the order in backwards spelling.

Zatara has already died under unspecified circumstances by the time that episode took place.

Wildcat possessed " 9 Lives ", a result of the magician Zatara altering a curse placed upon him by a sorcerer named King Inferno after Ted refused to throw a boxing match for the wizard.

At first panicking and crying out for the others to help him, and almost pulling his hands away from the circle, Sargon was rebuked by Zatara to maintain his composure and die like a sorcerer.

However, appearances by characters such as Zatara and The Shade suggests that the miniseries may take place in the DC Universe, and the female Creeper may be regarded as a 1920s predecessor of Jack Ryder.
