In his 1341 poem, The Iron Cannon Affair, one of the first accounts of the use of gunpowder artillery in China, Xian Zhang wrote that a cannonball fired from an eruptor could " pierce the heart or belly when it strikes a man or horse, and can even transfix several persons at once.

Early reference to the Chinese export of ivory is recorded after the Chinese explorer Zhang Qian ventured to the west to form alliances to enable for the eventual free movement of Chinese goods to the west ; as early as the first century BC, ivory was moved along the Northern Silk Road for consumption by western nations.

The first organized form of Taoism, the Tianshi ( Celestial Masters ') school ( later known as Zhengyi school ), developed from the Five Pecks of Rice movement at the end of the 2nd century AD ; the latter had been founded by Zhang Daoling, who claimed that Laozi appeared to him in the year 142.

This earned him the aid of other local militaries controlled by Zhang Miao and Chen Gong, who joined his cause to create his first sizable army.

To address the problem of slowed timekeeping in the pressure head of the inflow water clock, Zhang was the first in China to install an additional tank between the reservoir and inflow vessel.

Although the use of the graduated scale and grid reference for maps was not thoroughly described until the published work of Pei Xiu ( 224 – 271 CE ), there is evidence that in the early 2nd century CE, cartographer Zhang Heng was the first to use scales and grids for maps.

The weakness of the Greco-Bactrian empire was shown by its sudden and complete overthrow, first by the Sakas, and then by the Yuezhi ( who later became known as Kushans ), who had conquered Bactria by the time of the visit of the Chinese envoy Zhang Qian ( circa 127 BC ), who had been sent by the Han emperor to investigate lands to the west of China.

The name Daxia appears in Chinese from the 3rd century BC to designate a mythical kingdom to the West, possibly a consequence of the first contacts with the expansion of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, and then is used by the explorer Zhang Qian in 126 BC to designate Bactria.

The rebellions ( 187-189 ) of Zhang Chun ( died 189 ) and Zhang Ju ( died 189 ) in You Province in alliance with this Wuhuan cavalry unit marked the first of many such collaborations.

Zheng Xiaoxu served as Manchukuo's first prime minister until 1935, when Zhang Jinghui succeeded him.

Zhang Heng was the first to employ hydraulics to provide motive power in rotating an armillary sphere for astronomical observation.

Zhang Heng is often accredited with the invention of the first odometer device in China.

Meanwhile, Joseph Stalin and his Soviet Union in the 1920s and early of 1930s stood by Japan ’ s invasion of China at first, for they too had also invaded Manchuria and waged a war against Zhang and his father.

The world's first water-powered celestial globe was created by Zhang Heng, who operated his armillary sphere by use of an inflow clepsydra clock ( see Zhang's article for more detail ).

In AD 132, Zhang Heng of China's Han dynasty invented the first seismoscope ( by the definition above ), which was called Houfeng Didong Yi ( literally, " instrument for measuring the seasonal winds and the movements of the Earth ").

Born in the town of Xi ' e in Nanyang Commandery ( located north of modern Nanyang City, Henan province ), Zhang Heng came from a distinguished but not very affluent family.

This came around 130 BC, with the embassies of the Han Dynasty to Central Asia, following the reports of the ambassador Zhang Qian ( who was originally sent to obtain an alliance with the Yuezhi against the Xiongnu ).

During the Warlord Era in the early twentieth century, Liaoning was under the Fengtian Clique, including Zhang Zuolin and his son Zhang Xueliang ; in 1931, Japan invaded and the area came under the rule of the Japanese-controlled puppet state of Manchukuo.

A breakthrough came in 1934, when the cartoonist was introduced to Zhang Chongren, a Chinese student, who explained Chinese politics, culture, language, art, and philosophy to him, which Hergé used to great effect in The Blue Lotus.

One of the best reviews came from Manohla Dargis in The New York Times, who called the film, " An unqualified triumph ," and praised Zhang Ziyi's performance, states: " Ms. Zhang's shockingly intense performance burns a hole in the film that gives everything, including all the other relationships, a sense of terrific urgency.

Hsüan Tsung having promised, Fa-shan then said: " Zhang Guo Lao is a white spiritual bat which came out of primeval chaos.

He stretched his neck out to make it easier for him to be beheaded, and the angry Cao Cao then came for Zhang Liao with a sword in hand.

Zhang He and his troops then came under command of the new lord.

Fortunately, a friendly force led by Guan Xing and Zhang Bao came to the rescue and brought back Huang Zhong.

They found three descendants of Liu Zhang, Prince of Chengyang, who was very popular with the people of his principality ( from which many Chimei soldiers came ) and who was worshiped as a god after his death.

The old man came back after walking a distance and praised Zhang Liang, " This child can be taught!

Zhang Qian also describes the origins of the Yuezhi, explaining they came from the eastern part of the Tarim Basin, a momentous explanation which has encouraged historians to connect them to the Caucasoid mummies, as well as to the Indo-European-speaking Tocharians that have been identified from precisely the same area:

One of his staff came out and reminded him that Cao Cao's order was that the army could not cross the jurisdiction of Dai, and further pursuit was straightly prohibited, but Cao Zhang argued that a good general did not follow dull orders, and threatened if anyone did not join the pursuit would be penalized with death sentence ; thus, they performed a 24 hours dash to catch up with the Wuhuan cavalry, and dealt the latter a major blow which caused a few thousands casualties.

However, news came that Cao Zhang, leading a hundred-thousand strong army from Chang ' an, was approaching the capital.

She came in victorious in singles, winning the title by beating Tímea Babos 6 – 3, 6 – 3 in the final ; and finished as the runner up in doubles, partnering with Zhang Shuai, to Chan Hao-ching and Rika Fujiwara 6 – 4, 4 – 6,.

More proof of Zhang Chu's considerable talent with language came in the form of a pair of allegorical tracks on the album: " Ants ants " and " The fly ".

One exception came at the 2007 All-Englands where Wei Yili and Zhang Yawen defeated both of these teams to capture the highly coveted title.

Zhang's armies moved on to attack Tian Rong of Qi, while Xiang Liang of Chu came to help Qi and defeated Zhang.

The story in The Story of the Western Wing by Wang Shifu of the Yuan Dynasty ( 1271 – 1368 ) directly came from the prose romance The Story of Yingying by Yuan Zhen of the Tang Dynasty ( 618-907 ). The Story of Yingying is a tragedy about the love, union and separation between Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying in the first year of the Zhenyuan reign in the Tang Dynasty ( 618-907 ).

After the death of Zhang Rang, warlord He Jin came into power, and Wang Yun was promoted to the Gentleman of the Household and later to the Intendant of Henan ( 河南尹 ).

According to Zhu Yu's book Pingzhou Table Talks (; Pingzhou Ketan ) of 1119, Shen Kuo had two marriages ; the second wife was the daughter of Zhang Chu (), who came from Huainan.

When Cao Cao's force came to the Bai River ( 白河 ), Zhang Xiu promptly surrendered and was allowed to keep control of Wancheng.
