Lars von Trier (; born Lars Trier ; 30 April 1956 ) is a Danish film director and screenwriter.

The name is sort of an inside-joke with the von ( German " of " or " from " used as a nobiliary particle ), suggesting nobility and a certain arrogance, while Lars is a very common and Trier not an unusual name in Denmark.

The film is partly a dark science fiction-tale of a future plague epidemic, and partly chronicles two filmmakers ( played by Lars von Trier and screenwriter Niels Vørsel ) preparing that film, with the two storylines ultimately colliding.
