This theme played out with many artists from the Low Countries in the first few decades of the 17th century, where it became associated with the Utrecht Caravaggisti like Gerrit van Honthorst and Dirck van Baburen, and with Flemish Baroque painters such as Jacob Jordaens.

The collection consisted of Rembrandt ( 13 paintings ), Rubens ( 11 paintings ), Jacob Jordaens ( 7 paintings ), Antoon van Dyck ( 5 paintings ), Paolo Veronese ( 5 paintings ), Frans Hals ( 3 paintings, including Portrait of a Young Man with a Glove ), Raphael ( 2 paintings ), Holbein ( 2 paintings ), Titian ( 1 painting ), Jan Steen ( The Idlers ), Hendrick Goltzius, Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick van Balen and Gerrit van Honthorst.

Inspired by the paintings of Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers and Jan Steen, Verhaeren described in a direct and often provocative, naturalistic way his country and the Flemish people.

Jacob Jordaens ( 19 May 1593 – 18 October 1678 ) was one of three Flemish Baroque painters, along with Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, to bring prestige to the Antwerp school of painting.

Jacob Jordaens was born on 19 May 1593, the first of eleven children, to the wealthy linen merchant Jacob Jordaens Sr. and Barbara van Wolschaten in Antwerp.

Although Jacob Jordaens did not specialize, he often repeated a theme based on a proverb that depicted a wide range of characters of a variety of ages, crowded in a festive scene around a banquet table.

One year after his death, Jacob Jordaens ' son donated " twenty-five Flemish pounds to the Camer van den Huysarmen in Antwerp.

Apparently this was all done in following correspondence with a will that Jacob Jordaens left behind.
