William Holland Thomas, a white store owner and state legislator from Jackson County, North Carolina, helped over 600 Cherokee from Qualla Town obtain North Carolina citizenship, which exempted them from forced removal.

In 1874 the tribe was relocated to land in the Cherokee Outlet in Oklahoma Territory, in Pawnee County, Oklahoma.

With the 1870 Drum Creek Treaty, the Kansas land was sold for $ 1. 25 per acre and the Osage purchased in Indian Territory ’ s Cherokee Outlet, the current Osage County, Oklahoma.

Before settlement, Clay County was home to the Cherokee Indians, who were a tribe of Native Americans that made their home in Southeastern United States ( principally Georgia, the Carolinas and Eastern Tennessee ) They were one of the " Five Civilized Tribes " because of their assimilation of European-American cultural and technological practices.

In the Fall of 1860, George Hayes, who was running for Representative from Cherokee County, promised his southeastern constituents to introduce legislation to form a new county.

Clay County was formed primarily from Cherokee County, North Carolina, however a small area was taken from Macon County, North Carolina.

There are five counties adjacent to Clay County ; Macon County to the northeast ; Rabun County to the southeast ; Towns County, Georgia, to the south ; Union County, Georgia to the southwest ; Cherokee County, to the north.

The lowest point in the state of Kansas is located on the Verdigris River in Cherokee Township in Montgomery County ( just southeast of Coffeyville ), where it flows out of Kansas and into Oklahoma.

Cherokee County was established by European Americans on January 9, 1836.

Cherokee County was created by the Alabama legislature on 1836 January 9 following the Treaty of New Echota, 1835 December 29 which was never accepted by the elected tribal leadership or a majority of the Cherokee people because it was signed by a group lacking the authority to sign any documents on behalf of the tribe and despite a tribal law forbidding anyone to sign such a treaty, see Treaty of New Echota.
