Quaife was unable to find a direct link to Point du Sable, but identified descendants of Pierre Dandonneau living around the great lakes region in Detroit, Mackinac, and St Joseph, leading him to speculate that Point du Sable's father was a member of this family, whilst his mother was a slave.

The city was named after the headland of Dana Point, which was in turn named for Richard Henry Dana, Jr., author of Two Years Before the Mast, which included a description of the area.

In 1926, Woodruff, Chandler, and Sherman created the Dana Point Syndicate.

" Killer Dana " was a legendary surf break off Dana Point.

The Killer Dana wave was destroyed when the Dana Point Harbor was built in 1966.

The Dana Point headlands are a prominent feature in Orange County geography and after years of controversy, are currently being developed as a 118-house gated community.

Dana Point enjoys a mild climate where temperatures tend to average around the 70's.
