Many of the songs on the album display experimentation with unlikely musical genres, borrowing directly from such sources as 1930s dance-hall music ( in " Honey Pie "), classical chamber music ( in " Piggies "), the avant-garde sensibilities of Yoko Ono and John Cage ( in " Revolution 9 "), country-style music ( Ringo Starr's " Don't Pass Me By "), a western-style saloon ballad (" Rocky Raccoon "), and the lush sentimentality of Henry Mancini's film scores ( in " Good Night ").

According to northern soul DJ Ady Croadsell, viewed retrospectively, the earliest recording to possess this style was the 1965 single " I Can't Help Myself ( Sugar Pie Honey Bunch )" by The Four Tops, although that record was never popular in the northern soul scene because it was too mainstream.

The most popular of their hits ( all of which featured Stubbs on lead vocals ) include " Baby I Need Your Loving ", " I Can't Help Myself ( Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch )", " It's the Same Old Song ", " Reach Out I'll Be There ", " Standing in the Shadows of Love ", " Bernadette ", " Still Water ( Love )", " Ain't No Woman ( Like the One I've Got )" as well as the late hit " Loco In Acapulco ".

After " I Can't Help Myself ( Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch )" hit # 1 in June 1965, The Four Tops ' former label, Columbia Records, wanting to cash in on the group's success, re-released the Tops ' 1960 Columbia single " Ain't That Love ".

Lead singer Levi Stubbs delivers many of the lines in the song in a tone that straddles the line between singing and shouting, like he did in 1965's " I Can't Help Myself ( Sugar Pie Honey Bunch )".
