Another of his most important works was the marble and bronze Fountain of Neptune ( Fontana del Nettuno ) for the Piazza della Signoria.

It was built in the style of an army camp with the main streets, the cardo and the decumanus, intersecting at the present Piazza della Repubblica.

He was convicted as a heretic and burned at the stake on the Piazza della Signoria on 23 May 1498.

The Piazza ( first renamed Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele II, then Piazza della Repubblica, the present name ) was significantly widened and a large triumphal arch was constructed at the west end.

Other projects include the new district near the Santa Gilla pond ( Piazza Santa Gilla ), a luxurious beauty-center on the Poetto beach, where now is the old abandoned " Marino " hospital, the new university campus, designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, and the new " Parco della musica ", a great park with an amphitheatre and fountains, channels and water-games, between T-hotel and the Civic Theatre ; the latter will be finished by the end of the year, while the other works will be finished by 2010 – 2011.

Other attractions include the Norman Arc, that is the remains of the old Norman Castle built in 1073 and demolished in 1880, and a number of churches, including the Royal Saint Nicholas ( San Nicolò Regale ) Church, a rare example of Norman architecture built in 1124, the Seminary, built in 1710, which surrounds the main local piazza, Piazza della Repubblica, and St. Vitus on the Sea ( San Vito a Mare ) Church.

His sculptures have never inspired the admiration given those of Michelangelo, specially the colossal ( 5. 05 m ) marble group of Hercules and Cacus ( completed in 1534 ) in the Piazza della Signoria, Florence, and Adam and Eve in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, which both stand within sight of some of Michelangelo's masterworks.

The subject was not finally determined until after it had been set up in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence's Piazza della Signoria.

This work was especially influential in Florence where there was a love of the colossal, and it may have led to the plans for the Neptune Fountain in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence.

In 1565, as recorded by Vasari himself, Grand Duke Cosimo I de ' Medici decided to build the long corridor which would connect the old Priors ’ Palace in Piazza della Signoria with the new Medici residence, previously property of the Pitti family ; as this would pass through the church of Santa Felicita, the church began to play a very important role in the life of the Medici court.

The sculpture was allegedly brought to the Accademia for reasons of conservation, although other factors were involved in its move from its previous outdoor location on Piazza della Signoria.

There is a replica in the Piazza della Signoria and some visitors leave thinking they have seen the real thing when they have only seen the replica.

In this chapel, Girolamo Savonarola said his last prayers before he was hanged on the Piazza della Signoria and his body burned.

Francesco Salviati, Archbishop of Pisa and a main organizer of the plot, was hanged on the walls of the Florentine Palazzo della Signoria.
