The comic book " City of Devils " ( 1983 ) features two Doctor Who companions, journalist Sarah Jane Smith ( likeness ' Elisabeth Sladen ) and robot dog K-9 uncover a hidden city of Silurians ( here, ' Eocenes ') in an Egyptian archaeological dig, who seek peaceful coexistence with humans ; this comic strip is based on the premise of failed television spin-off series K9 and Company.

K-9 and Company is a proposed television spin-off of the original programme run of Doctor Who ( 1963 – 1989 ).

Although a full series of K-9 and Company was not produced, the two characters did re-appear two years later in The Five Doctors, an episode of Doctor Who broadcast in 1983 celebrating the show's twentieth anniversary.

Only when one looks narrowly at Season 19 – the one which immediately followed the broadcast of K-9 and Company – can one find a period where sustained ratings in the parent show were higher than the ratings for this spin-off pilot.

The story was released on video in the UK on 7 August 1995 as Doctor Who: K-9 and Company.

By 1994, when the final Target book was published, all but six of the broadcast Doctor Who serials had been novelised, as well as a radio serial ( Slipback ), stories slated for the " missing season " but never produced due to the 18-month hiatus in 1985-1986 ( The Nightmare Fair, The Ultimate Evil and Mission to Magnus ), the spinoff K-9 And Company, and even a 1976 children's story record ( The Pescatons ), which has the distinction of being the final Doctor Who book published under the Target imprint.

These books sold well, but after a third attempt ( a 1987 novelisation of the 1981 Doctor Who spin-off, K-9 and Company ) the series ended due to rights disputes between the publishers and the BBC.

The first spin-off attempt that actually reached the production stage appeared in 1981, when a 50-minute pilot episode for a series to be called K-9 and Company was aired.

K-9 has also been a central character in three of the series television spin-offs: the unsuccessful K-9 and Company ( 1981 ), The Sarah Jane Adventures ( 2007 – 2011 ) and K-9 ( 2009 – 2010 ).

Producers hoped K-9's popularity with children would launch the series K-9 and Company, led by actress Elisabeth Sladen in the role of companion Sarah Jane Smith alongside a new K-9.

K-9 Mark III first appeared in the character's spin-off series, K-9 and Company in its 1981 pilot " A Girl's Best Friend ".
