We shall recommend policies for the simple reason that we consider them right ( rather than “ non-controversial ”); and we consider them right because they are based on principles we deem right ( rather than on popularity polls )... The New Deal revolution, for instance, could hardly have happened save for the cumulative impact of The Nation and The New Republic, and a few other publications, on several American college generations during the twenties and thirties.

There were widespread protests against The Birth of a Nation, and it was banned in several cities.

He is best known as the director of the epic 1915 film The Birth of a Nation and the subsequent film Intolerance ( 1916 ).

Griffith's film The Birth of a Nation made pioneering use of advanced camera and narrative techniques, and its immense popularity set the stage for the dominance of the feature-length film in the United States.

What became known as the popular ' classical Hollywood ' style of editing was developed by early European and American directors, in particular D. W. Griffith in his films such as The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance.

As for Griffith, in Birth of a Nation there are just eight cuts to reverse-angle shots in the scene in Ford's Theatre, while elsewhere throughout the two-and-a-half hour length of this film there are only four more true reverse-angle cuts.

Bestselling author Pat Conroy, in his preface to the novel, describes Mitchell's portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan as having " the same romanticized role it had in The Birth of a Nation and appears to be a benign combination of the Elks Club and a men's equestrian society.
