Due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Bab el Mandeb gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, Djibouti also hosts various foreign military bases.

The Bab el Qattara box — some from the coast and southwest of the Ruweisat Ridge — had been dug but had not been wired or mined, while at the Naq Abu Dweis box ( on the edge of the Qattara Depression ), from the coast, very little work had been done.

The major choke points include Bab el Mandeb, Strait of Hormuz, the Lombok Strait, the Strait of Malacca and the Palk Strait.
