Alan Rodger was born on 18 September 1944 in Glasgow, to Professor T Ferguson Rodger, Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Glasgow, and Jean Margaret Smith Chalmers, and educated at the independent Kelvinside Academy in the city.

Chalmers was subsequently appointed Professor of Philosophy ( 1999 – 2004 ) and, later, Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies ( 2002 – 2004 ) at the University of Arizona, sponsor of the Toward a Science of Consciousness conference where in 1994 he gave a well-received talk that raised his profile in the cognitive science community.

The Upper School features the Munger Science Center and computer lab ; Rugby building which houses the English department, 300-seat theater, costume shop, and drama lab ; Seaver building, home to the foreign language and history departments as well as administrative offices and visitor lobby ; Chalmers which houses the performing arts and math departments, book store, cafeteria, beloved sandwich window, and student lounge ; and the Feldman-Horn visual arts studios, dark room, video labs, and gallery.

The observatory is hosted by Department of Earth and Space Science at Chalmers University of Technology, and is operated on behalf of the Swedish Research Council.

He was previously a lecturer at the Computing Science Department at Chalmers University of Technology.

Like his brother, Dr Thomas Chalmers, mathematician, physicist and theologian, Charles was also interested in Mathematics and Science so he included these subjects in the curriculum at a time when secondary education in Scotland was focussed more on the study of the classics.

Chalmers University of Technology (, often shortened to Chalmers ), is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural science and architecture.

The University was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers ( 1748 – 1811 ), a director of the Swedish East India Company, whose ships sailed across the world to supply Europe with goods from the East.

Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.

In the latest ( 2011 / 2012 ) Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011 / 2012 Chalmers ranked between 226 and 250 of all global universities.

In the 2011 International Professional Ranking of Higher Education Institutions, which is established on the basis of the number of alumni holding a post of Chief executive officer ( CEO ) or equivalent in one of the Fortune Global 500 companies, Chalmers University of Technology ranked 38th in the world, ranking 1st in Sweden and 15th in Europe.

He was apprenticed to the lawyer George Chalmers WS when he was 17, but took more interest in chemical experiments than legal work and at the age of 18 became a physician's assistant as well as attending lectures in medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
