This manuscript, the contents of which are fully catalogued in the Fourth Report ( 1874 ) of the Historical Manuscripts Commission ( Appendix, pp. 379 – 397 ), contains numerous letters from various popes, from the king, a correspondence dealing with the affairs of the university of Oxford, another with the province of Gascony, beside some harangues and letters evidently meant as models to be used on various occasions.

When critics closed in and accused Samuel Ireland of forgery, his son published a confession – An Authentic Account of the Shaksperian Manuscripts – but many critics could not believe a young man could have forged them all by himself.

His antiquarian learning caused him to be appointed a member of the Historical Manuscripts Commission in 1869, and in that capacity he acted as joint editor ( with John Prendergast ) of the eight-volume Report on the Carte Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library ( 1871 ) and the Calendar of Irish State Papers during the reign of James I ( 4 vols., 1872 – 1877 ).

This was one of the collection of manuscripts amassed at the mansion of Hengwrt, near Dolgellau, Gwynedd, by Welsh antiquary Robert Vaughan ( c. 1592 – 1667 ); the collection later passed to the newly established National Library of Wales as the Peniarth or Hengwrt-Peniarth Manuscripts.

Philip Comfort and David Barret in their book Text of the Earliest NT Greek Manuscripts argue for a more general date of 150 – 175 for the manuscript, and also for < sup > 4 </ sup > and < sup > 67 </ sup >, which they argue came from the same codex.

His manuscript collection was purchased by Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer ( 1661 – 1724 ), and passed with the Harleian Manuscripts to the British Museum in 1753 as one of the foundation collections.

He was a Fellow of Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce ( FRSA ) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh ( FRSE ), Prior of the Scottish Venerable Order of St John ( GCStJ ) ( 1983 – 1995 ), and served as Her Majesty's Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland ( May 1986 – 1987 ), on the Royal Commission on Historic Manuscripts 1987-1994, and was a member of the Aberdeen University Court ( 1978 – 1984 ), and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Farmers.

James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde, refers to " Buttiphante " in a letter of January 1684 ( Carte Manuscripts, Bodleian, 161, f. 47v ), while Sir John Percival, progenitor of the Earls of Egmont, recorderd in his diary for the 16 March 1686 that the troopers " being att Buttevant Fair this day took Will Tirry and his wife and brought them hither and I examined them ".
