* January 30 – John Howard becomes leader of the Liberal Party of Australia to challenge Paul Keating for the 1996 Federal Election and the position of Prime Minister of Australia.

Following the Conservative Party's defeat in the 1997 General Election, Howard unsuccessfully made a bid for the post of Conservative Party leader and held the posts of Shadow Foreign Secretary ( 1997 – 1999 ) and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer ( 2001 – 2003 ).

Howard did not contest his seat of Folkestone and Hythe in the 2010 General Election and entered the House of Lords as Baron Howard of Lympne.

When Major resigned after the 1997 General Election defeat, Redwood stood for the leadership, and was again defeated, though he secured more support than rival candidates Peter Lilley and Michael Howard.

The party leadership could therefore require a rebellious MP ( or an MP involved in a scandal ) to be deselected as a candidate by removing his or her name from the Candidates ' List or by removing the whip as was done to Howard Flight MP at the 2005 General Election.

He became the spokesman for Work and Pensions under the leadership of Iain Duncan Smith, moving briefly to speak on Constitutional Affairs in 2003 under Michael Howard and back to Work and Pensions in 2004, where he remains following the 2005 General Election.

Ongoing criminal proceedings against the said individual in courts does not disqualify the person from membership of the Lok Sabha ; however this must be clearly mentioned while filing the affidavit to the Election Commission.

In the 2005 General Election she successfully contested the East Coast Electorate, beating Labour Candidate Moana Mackey, daughter of the previous East Coast MP Janet Mackey.
