The next day Captain Edward Buller, commander of the Sea Fencibles along the coast of Devon, reported that on the previous day, the brig Susannah had left Dartmouth only to fall prey to the French 14-gun privateer Heureux Speculateur.

In 1804, the Sea Fencibles had some 28 gun vessels of various sorts-a brig, three galliots, and the rest sloops.

On May 26, 1778, Fanning embarked from Boston, Massachusetts aboard the brig Angelica as a prizemaster under the command of Captain William Denison in a cruise against the British.

In 1792, the island was discovered by Lieutenant William Robert Broughton, commander of the Royal Navy survey brig HMS Chatham, who named it Menzies, after the botanist of his ship Archibald Menzies and naming Vancouver after his commander George Vancouver.

F. S. Dutton's brother William Hampden Dutton ( 1805 – 1849 ) was pastoralist of Anlaby station and miner at Kapnda, not to be confused with the unrelated William Pelham Dutton ( 1811 – 1878 ) who was born William Dutton in Sydney, shifted with his family to Tasmania in 1813 and was for many years captain of the brig Lady Mary Pelham, one of the ships chartered by the South Australian Company in 1836.
