In 1985, the museum was designated by Baltimore mayor William Donald Schaefer as the official archives of the Baltimore Colts, which had moved the previous year to Indianapolis.

Marchibroda was already well known because of his work as head coach of the Baltimore Colts during the 1970s and the Indianapolis Colts during the early 1990s.

The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana and play their home games at Lucas Oil Stadium.

It was in 1994 that Robert Irsay brought in Bill Tobin to become the next general manager of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts won their first postseason game as the Indianapolis Colts in 1995 and would go onto the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, coming Hail Mary pass reception away from a trip to the Super Bowl XXX.
