The remaining six are leptons, three of which are neutrinos, and the remaining three of which have an electric charge of − 1: the electron and its two cousins, the muon and the tau.

The New Testament writings about the crucifixion of Jesus do not speak specifically about the shape of that cross, but the early writings that do speak of its shape, from about the year 100 on, describe it as shaped like the letter T ( the Greek letter tau ) or as composed of an upright and a transverse beam, sometimes with a small ledge in the upright.

This has been usefully done to put limits on the mass of a stable tau neutrino.

Since then, discoveries of the bottom quark ( 1977 ), the top quark ( 1995 ), and the tau neutrino ( 2000 ) have given further credence to the Standard Model.
