Scientific Experimentation

Overview:

Joel received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Washington in June 2003. During his four years at UW, he took advantage of the research opportunities that they offered.

Joel worked for the Gamma ray Large Array Space Telescope (GLAST) project at UW for the previous year. His most recent project involved writing a portable library in C++ that used Xerxes XML parser. It parsed a classification tree written in XML by another program for use by a C++ application.

Joel also submitted code to the portable CMT project for GLAST that added functionality for Visual C++.NET.

In 2000, Joel worked for the Experimental Atomic Physics Lab with Assistant Professor Romalis (now at Princeton). He prototyped electronics and machined enclosures for them. He also wrote Visual C++ code that interfaced with NI-DAQ to collect data for analysis.

In the last year, Joel took Optics Laboratory in which he did scientific experiments and technical reports on his findings. With his understanding of technical writing, Joel can produce high quality technical reports on experiments and theoretical studies.

In 2001, Joel took a quarter of LabView. For a final project, he and his lab partner built a Sonar Rangefinder using two sonar tranceivers and a custom data analysis program written in LabView.

During his first year at UW, Joel took the freshman chemistry lab series. This gave him a firm understanding of lab procedure and lab report writing.

During the summer of 2001, Joel wrote a simple data analysis program for Skip Soli, physicist. The program imported ascii data and calculated mean and standard deviation for each of the components.

With his experience, Joel Voss is a natural choice for a lab technician, research partner, or scientific consultant.
