Carbon black was probably one of the first pigments to be used for tattooing, and Ötzi the Iceman was found to have carbon tattoos that survived during his life and for 5200 years after his death.

Remarkable evidence for this is provided by the discovery of the 5000-year-old remains of " Ötzi the Iceman ", who carried it on a cross-alpine excursion before his murder and subsequent ice-entombment.

It was one of the knots likely identified among the possessions of Ötzi the Iceman, who dates from 3300 BC.
