As his mate was not available on the Genesis planet ( where Spock underwent the two pon farr periods ), it was implied that he mated with Lt. Saavik, a female Vulcan scientist on the crew of the Enterprise who showed compassion in guiding him through the accelerated pon farr ( in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, a deleted scene was intended to confirm the implication ( i. e., that Saavik bore Spock's child ); its removal from the film, however, struck it from ' official ' Trek canon ).

A variation of that name, Saavik, was later given to a female Vulcan when elements of several premises were combined for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and elements of Xon, such as his search to understand humans, would be transferred later into the character Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

" Meyer and Bennett cut out Krikes and Meerson's idea of having the Klingon Bird-of-Prey fly over the Super Bowl and the hint that Saavik remained on Vulcan because she was pregnant with Spock's child.

Initially, the character of Saavik, who appeared in the second through fourth Star Trek films, was intended to be the traitor, but Gene Roddenberry objected to making a character loved by fans into a villain.

Cattrall was unwilling to be the third actress to play Saavik ( a part she had originally auditioned for ), but accepted the role when she became a different character.

The scene, using the set built to represent the bridge of the Enterprise further on in the movie, was an economic vehicle to introduce the character, Lt. Saavik, played by Kirstie Alley, the concept of the no-win scenario and the plot line that James Kirk had never faced such a scenario.

Their Vulcan crews were abducted by Romulan scientists and their fertility was manipulated to produce half-Romulan, half-Vulcan children such as Saavik to use in mind control experiments.

After graduating, as a fresh Lieutenant Saavik was on her cadet cruise on the USS Enterprise with Admiral James T. Kirk and Captain Spock when Kirk's old enemy Khan Noonien Singh sought revenge for the failure of the Ceti Alpha V colony and the death of his wife, Marla McGivers-Singh, and attacked the Enterprise.

During this mission, Saavik discovered that Spock had somehow been regenerated, and was rapidly aging.

Also planned, but not featured in the final versions of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock was a romantic relationship between Saavik and David Marcus.

In an early draft of the script, this was Saavik, in the hopes that Kirstie Alley would return for the large role, as director Nicholas Meyer wasn't pleased with Robin Curtis ' portrayal in The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home, using characters that had appeared in prior films ( even in small parts ) turning out to be significant players this time.

The novelization of this film actually includes a sequence in which Valeris, newly appointed to the Enterprise, meets Saavik, but it is not known if such a scene was ever planned for the movie.

Saavik was at one point to appear in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, " Cause and Effect " in a scene in which the Enterprise-D encounters a starship that had been trapped in a time anomaly for some 80 years.

Samuel A. Peeples ' unused script, Worlds That Never Were, for the second Star Trek film, had a male character called " Doctor Savik ", who eventually was morphed into the female Lieutenant Saavik.

* The production team had hoped to get Kirstie Alley in a cameo role behind Kelsey Grammer in the USS Bozeman shots, reprising her role as Lt. Saavik from the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, but her asking price was too high for such a small role.

( In addition, there has also been some debate about whether Spock rescued the child Saavik before or after the events that occurred during " Balance of Terror ".

This agrees with the Star Trek III: The Search for Spock novelization which said Saavik has never been to Vulcan until then.

Later in the film, after repeated inquiries from Saavik, Kirk says that the exercise is a true " no-win scenario ," because there is no correct resolution ; it is a test of character.

Lieutenant JG Saavik is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe.

Kirstie Alley, who had played Saavik in The Wrath of Khan, did not return to reprise her role because she feared being typecast.

Although her first appearance as ' Saavik ' in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ( Kirstie Alley had played the role first in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ) was promoted as being her film debut, in fact Curtis had already made several film and made-for-television movie appearances.

According to the DVD commentary of the film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, actors Leonard Nimoy and Kirstie Alley, portraying Spock and Saavik respectively, spoke their lines in English, and later dubbed in alien dialogue ( at least partially designed by linguist Marc Okrand ) that corresponded with the movements of their mouths in the scene.

Accompanied by the Vulcan Spock, still recovering from his resurrection, the crew take their stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey starship and head to Earth to face trial for their theft and destruction of the Enterprise, except for Saavik.

In the non-canon short story " Infinity " ( written by Susan Wright and collected into The Lives of Dax ), the shuttle in which Torias Dax dies is testing a prototype version of the transwarp drive ( as seen in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ) with the assistance of Lieutenant Saavik and under the command of Captain Stiles ( both appear in The Search for Spock ).

A rare expression of emotion by a Vulcan is displayed when Saavik is seen shedding a tear during the eulogy for Spock by Kirk.

And in the " Mirror Universe Saga " trilogy written by William Shatner, it is revealed that the mirror Spock had a daughter named T ' Val with mirror Saavik.

Kirstie Alley did play Saavik one other time, in a play set between The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, " The Machiavellian Principle " written by Walter Koenig for the ambitious " Ultimate Fantasy " convention.

This was followed by a second appearance as Lieutenant Saavik in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .< ref >
