The second generation was led by Fernand Braudel ( 1902 – 1985 ) and included Georges Duby ( 1919 – 1996 ), Pierre Goubert ( 1915 – 2012 ), Robert Mandrou ( 1921 – 1984 ), Pierre Chaunu ( 1923 – 2009 ), Jacques Le Goff ( 1924 – ) and Ernest Labrousse ( 1895 – 1988 ).

A third generation was led by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie ( 1929 – ) and includes Jacques Revel, and Philippe Ariès ( 1914 – 1984 ), who joined the group in 1978.

In reply to this the French sovereign dispatched Andrew as his ambassador to Güyük Khan ; with Longjumeau went his brother William ( also a Dominican ) and several others — John Goderiche, John of Carcassonne, Herbert " Le Sommelier ," Gerbert of Sens, Robert ( a clerk ), a certain William, and an unnamed clerk of Poissy.

Living in worsening poverty, neglecting his health, and drinking excessively, Jarry went on to write what is often cited as the first cyborg sex novel, Le Surmâle ( The Supermale ), which is partly a satire on the Symbolist ideal of self-transcendence.

It could be said that Aalto's international reputation was sealed with his inclusion in the second edition of Sigfried Giedion's influential book on Modernist architecture, Space, Time and Architecture: The growth of a new tradition ( 1949 ), in which Aalto received more attention than any other Modernist architect, including Le Corbusier.

There was at the top of the Arc from 1882 to 1886, a monumental sculpture by Alexandre Falguière, " Le triomphe de la Révolution " ( the Triumph of the Revolution ), a chariot drawn by horses preparing " to crush Anarchy and Despotism ", that remained only four years up there before falling in ruins.

Mipps then joined Syn in his quest for revenge, pursuing Tappitt and Imogene throughout the thirteen American colonies ( supposedly preaching the gospel to the Indians ) and around the world ( as part of a whaling voyage ) afterwards, and was with him in the Caribbean when Dr. Syn turned again to piracy, assuming the name of Captain Clegg ( taking the name " Clegg " from a certain vicious biting fly he had encountered in America ), hijacking his enemy Tappitt's own ship and crew and sailing off with them ( renaming the ship the Imogene ) to become the most infamous pirate of the day.

He also accompanied Cook's third voyage ( 1776 – 1778 ), this time aboard Resolutions sister ship, and the first European sighting and exploration of the Hawaiian Islands.

During the first leg of this voyage, while in west Africa ( 1748 – 1749 ), Newton acknowledged the inadequacy of his spiritual life.

When James Cook went on his first voyage he carried wort ( 0. 1 mg vitamin C per 100 g ), sauerkraut ( 10 – 15 mg per 100 g ) and a syrup, or " rob ", of oranges and lemons ( the juice contains 40 – 60 mg of vitamin C per 100 g ) as antiscorbutics, but only the results of the trials on wort were published.

The Luhu-class guided missile destroyer Qingdao and the replenishment oiler Taicang completed the PLA Navy's first circumnavigation of the world ( pictured ), a 123-day voyage covering between 15 May – 23 September 2002.

Speaker-to-Animals ( Speaker ), who is a Kzin, and Teela Brown, a young human woman, also join the voyage.

The first royal visit is speculated to have been by Prince Rupert of the Rhine ( 1619 – 1682 ), probably on his voyage home in India.

Four native Fuegians, including " Jemmy Button " ( Orundellico ), were brought from Tierra del Fuego by Robert FitzRoy on his first voyage with the HMS Beagle in 1830.

Zheng He made one more voyage during the reign of Hongxi's son Xuande Emperor ( reigned 1426 – 1435 ), but after that the voyages of the Chinese treasure ship fleets were ended.

* In " Via the Time Accelerator " by F. J. Bridge ( a pseudonym of Francis J. Brueckel ), from the January 1931 issue of Amazing Stories, a time traveler in 1930 wonders if he should travel to the future, and then he sees himself returning from the future, which reassures him about the success of his voyage.

This voyage went to Brazil, where Banks made the first scientific description of a now common garden plant, bougainvillea ( named after Cook's French counterpart, Louis Antoine de Bougainville ), and to other parts of South America.

The voyage then progressed to Tahiti ( where the transit of Venus was observed, the overt purpose of the mission ), to New Zealand and to the east coast of Australia, where Cook mapped the coastline and made landfall at Botany Bay and at Endeavour River ( near modern Cooktown ) in Queensland, where they spent almost seven weeks ashore while the ship was repaired after becoming holed on the Great Barrier Reef.

Williams's career as an author began with A Key into the Language of America ( London, 1643 ), written during his first voyage to England.

Cardinal Caesar Baronius, the Vatican Librarian and historian ( d. 1609 ), recorded this voyage by Joseph of Arimathea, Lazarus, Mary Magdalene, Martha, Marcella and others in his Annales Ecclesiastici, volume 1, section 35.

On the northern bank of Espírito Santo Estuary of Delagoa Bay, an inlet of the Indian Ocean, Lourenço Marques was named after the Portuguese navigator who, with a companion ( António Caldeira ), was sent in 1544 by the governor of Mozambique on a voyage of exploration.

Louis XVI and his court had been stimulated by a proposal from the merchant adventurer William Bolts, who had earlier tried unsuccessfully to interest Louis ’ s brother-in-law, the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II ( brother of Queen Marie Antoinette ), in a similar voyage.

With Louis XVIII using the title Comte d ' Isle ( named after his estate in Languedoc ), he and his family assumed residence in Warsaw in the Lazienki Palace from 1801 to 1804, after an arduous voyage from Jelgava.

The piece, " Le Marché aux Poissons " (" The Fish Market " in English ), is a color monotype, a one-of-a-kind print made by painting on glass and then transferring the wet paint to a piece of paper.

Honoré de Balzac introduced the perfectly worldly and unmoved Henri de Marsay in La fille aux yeux d ' or ( 1835 ), a part of La Comédie Humaine, who fulfills at first the model of a perfect dandy, until an obsessive love-pursuit unravels him in passionate and murderous jealousy.

He completed painting his last major work, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère ( Le Bar aux Folies-Bergère ), in 1882 and it hung in the Salon that year.

From June 1993 until September 2009 Caron owned and operated a hotel and restaurant, Auberge La Lucarne aux Chouettes ( The Owls ' Nest ), located in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, located about south of Paris.

Five works for phonograph ( known collectively as Cinq études de bruits — Five Studies of Noises ) including Etude violette ( Study in Purple ) and Etude aux chemins de fer ( Study of the Railroads ), were presented.

One was an extremely free translation ( or rather a paraphrase ) of The Protreptic of Galen ( Paraphrase de C. GALIEN, sus l ' Exhortation de Menodote aux estudes des bonnes Artz, mesmement Medicine ), and in his so-called Traité des fardemens ( basically a medical cookbook containing, once again, materials borrowed mainly from others ) he included a description of the methods he used to treat the plague – none of which, not even the bloodletting, apparently worked.

It is based on La dame aux Camélias ( 1852 ), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils.

Offenbach's earliest one-act pieces included Les deux aveugles, Le violoneux and Ba-ta-clan ( all 1855 ), and his first full-length operetta success was Orphée aux enfers ( 1858 ).

After starring in the sequel film La boum 2 ( 1982 ), Marceau focused on more dramatic roles, including Fort Saganne in 1984 with Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve, Joyeuses Pâques ( Happy Easter ) in 1984, L ' amour braque and Police in 1985, and Descente aux enfers ( Descent Into Hell ) in 1986.

This was followed by revivals of Racine's Phèdre ( 24 February ), Octave Feuillet's Dalila ( 8 March ), Gaston de Wailly's Patron Bénic ( 14 March ), Edmond Rostand's La Samaritaine ( 25 March ), and Alexandre Dumas fils's La Dame aux Camélias on 9 April.

Orphée aux enfers ( Orpheus in the Underworld ) is an opéra bouffon ( a form of operetta ), or opéra féerie in its revised version, by Jacques Offenbach.

His first major publication was a collection of prose poems, Le drageoir aux épices ( 1874 ), which were strongly influenced by Baudelaire.

The Vinland Map first came to light in 1957 ( three years before the discovery of the Norse site at L ' Anse aux Meadows in 1960 ), bound in a slim volume with a short medieval text called the Hystoria Tartarorum ( usually called in English the Tartar Relation ), and was unsuccessfully offered to the British Museum by London book dealer Irving Davis on behalf of a Spanish-Italian dealer named Enzo Ferrajoli de Ry.

During one stop at Îles aux Oiseaux ( Islands of the Birds, now the Rochers-aux-Oiseaux federal bird sanctuary, northeast of Brion Island in the Magdalen Islands ), his crew slaughtered around 1000 birds, most of them great auks ( now extinct ).

As a painter she became famous primarily for two chief works: Ploughing in the Nivernais ( in French: Le labourage nivernais, le sombrage ), which was first exhibited at the Salon of 1848, and is now in the Musée d ’ Orsay in Paris depicts a team of oxen ploughing a field while attended by peasants set against a vast pastoral landscape ; and, The Horse Fair ( in French: Le marché aux chevaux ) ( which was exhibited at the Salon of 1853 ( finished in 1855 ) and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.

Eustace II, ( – ), also known as Eustace aux Gernons ( with moustaches ) was Count of Boulogne from 1049 – 1087.

In the southern occupation zone, the Œuvre de secours aux enfants ( roughly, Children's Relief Effort ), a French-Jewish humanitarian organization commonly called OSE, saved the lives of between seven and nine thousand Jewish children by forging papers, smuggling them to neutral countries, and sheltering them in orphanages, schools, and convents.
