For example, the Ket language has been described as having up to eight tones by some investigators, as having four tones by others, but by some as having no tone at all.
The Ket language, formerly known as Yenisei Ostyak, is a Siberian language long thought to be an isolate, the sole surviving language of a Yeniseian language family.
Joseph Greenberg proposed a link between Ket and other Yeniseian languages and the Na-Dene language group of North America in his final study of Eurasiatic languages.
Edward Vajda spent a year in Siberia ( 2005 – 2006 ) studying the Ket people, and finds a relationship of Ket language to that of Native American Na-Dene languages, and also suggests the tonal system of the Ket language is closer to that of Vietnamese than any of the native Siberian languages.
There is some evidence that the speakers of the Paleosiberian languages such as the Ket language, which is the only surviving member of the Yeniseian family that is not moribund, migrated to their current homeland along the Yenisei River in Central Siberia from an area South of the Altai Mountains in the general vicinity of Mongolia or Northwest China within the last 2500 years or so ( although there is no evidence that this is related to the Altaic languages ).
Collectivization was completed by the 1950s and the Russian lifestyle and language forced upon the Ket people.
The Ket language has been linked to the Na-Dené languages of North America in the Dené – Yeniseian language family.
