During many years of Livonian War ( 1558 – 1582 ), however, they suffered a decisive defeat by troops of Muscovite Russia in the Battle of Ergeme in 1560 and continued living under great threat.

When his wife Queen Mary fell ill in 1558, King Philip sent the Count of Feria to consult with Elizabeth.

On 17 November 1558, Mary died and Elizabeth succeeded to the throne.

The reign of Elizabeth restored a sort of order to the realm following the turbulence of the reigns of Edward and Mary when she came to the throne following the death of Mary in 1558.
