Dieterich Buxtehude (, also Dietrich ; Danish Diderich, equivalent to the modern Diderik ) ( c. 1637 to 1639 — 9 May 1707 ) was a German-Danish organist and composer of the Baroque period.

The Shimabara Rebellion of 1637 – 38, in which discontented Catholic Christian samurai and peasants rebelled against the bakufu — and Edo called in Dutch ships to bombard the rebel stronghold — marked the end of the Christian movement, although some Catholic Christians survived by going underground, the so-called Kakure Kirishitan.

However, this did not prevent occupation, looting and torching of the city on several occasions during the Thirty Years ' War and of course it was no help at all against the Black Death, which killed 313 people ( out of a population of about 1, 000 ) in 1636 and 1637 while the war still raged.

On 22 February 1635, at Richelieu's urging, King Louis XIII granted letters patent formally establishing the body ; according to the letters patent registered at the Parlement de Paris on 10 July 1637, the Académie française was " to labor with all the care and diligence possible, to give exact rules to our language, to render it capable of treating the arts and sciences ".

The body is now in the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, where it was placed in a glass container encased in a silver casket on 2 December 1637.
