Land grants were first issued in the Mount Holly area by King George II of Great Britain around 1750.

The land was first granted by the Crown to Captain Isaac Pennington in 1734, and George Washington surveyed it on October 23, 1750.

Part of the prominent Irish Norman Plunkett family, which included Saint Oliver Plunkett ( 1629 – 1681 ), George's relatives included the Earls of Fingall-his great-grandfather George Plunkett ( 1750 – 1824 ) was " in the sixth degree removed in relationship " ( fifth cousin ) to the 8th Earl of Fingall-and the Barons of Dunsany, whose line had conformed to the Church of Ireland in the eighteenth century.

This latter batch of papers are the letters which were presented to George III, and which possibly reached Orwell through Sir George Pretyman Tomline ( 1750 – 1827 ), the tutor and friend of William Pitt.

In 1750 the English astronomer Thomas Wright, in his An original theory or new hypothesis of the Universe, speculated ( correctly ) that the galaxy might be a rotating body of a huge number of stars held together by gravitational forces, akin to the solar system but on a much larger scale.
