In 1805, American inventor Oliver Evans designed, but never built, a refrigeration system based on the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle rather than chemical solutions or volatile liquids such as ethyl ether.
Originally named for Oliver Partridge, one of the three purchasers of the town ( along with Governor Francis Bernard ), the name was officially changed to Peru in 1805, possibly because of its high altitude.
Oliver, died in June 1805, shortly after their marriage and two months after the death of his beloved father.
