William III ( Willem Alexander Paul Frederik Lodewijk, anglicised: William Alexander Paul Frederick Louis ; 19 February 1817 – 23 November 1890 ) was King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1849 until his death in 1890.

Recognising that a large investment was needed to keep the river profitable, an attempt was made in 1817 to sell it to the Duke of Norfolk for £ 12, 000, but this came to nothing.

In 1807 the house was purchased by Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, the elder brother of Sir Arthur Wellesley, but in 1817 financial difficulties forced him to sell it to his famous brother, by then the Duke of Wellington, who needed a London base from which to pursue his new career in politics.

After the death of Princess Charlotte in 1817, the Duke was set the task of finding a bride for his eldest unmarried brother, the Duke of Clarence ( later William IV ), in the hope of securing heirs to the throne — Charlotte had been the only legitimate grandchild of George III, despite the fact that the King had twelve surviving children.
