Simon Boccanegra is an opera with a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play Simón Bocanegra ( 1843 ) by Antonio García Gutiérrez.
This composition, which was published by subscription ( 1826 ), attained a success unequalled by that of any other Italian poem within the century ; it provided the subject for Giuseppe Verdi's success of 1843, I Lombardi alla prima crociata, premiered in Milan at La Scala.
In the following four years, eight volumes were published, and after the death of Rosellini on June 4, 1843 in Pisa, the nine volumes of text comprised no less than 3, 300 pages, while the atlas contained 390 large plates by the artists Giuseppe Angelelli, Salvatore Cherubini, Nestor L ' Hote and Gaetano Rosellini.
His story was popularized by Antonio García Gutiérrez's 1843 play Simón Bocanegra and Giuseppe Verdi's 1857 opera Simon Boccanegra.

L ' elisir d ' amore, a comedy produced in 1832, came soon after, and is deemed one of the masterpieces of 19th-century opera buffa ( as is his Don Pasquale, written for Paris in 1843 ).
He changed the location and names to the final Norwegian version while the opera was in rehearsals for its first production, which took place in Dresden in January 1843 with Wagner himself conducting.
Its first performance in Vienna was at the Kärtnertortheater on 14 May 1843, a production in which Donizetti participated and added the comic baritone duet " Cheti, cheti, immantinente " from a discarded portion of his unperformed opera L ' ange de Nisida.

However, from the early 1840s, as Wagner developed Tannhäuser and Lohengrin, his ideas on opera increasingly diverged from Meyerbeerean standards ; even in 1843 Wagner had written to Schumann condemning Meyerbeer's work as ' a striving after superficial popularity '.
