# REDIRECT Dual Alliance, 1879

The Dual Alliance was a defensive alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, which was created by treaty on October 7, 1879 as part of Bismarck's system of alliances to prevent / limit war.

In 1879, Bismarck formed a Dual Alliance of Germany and Austria-Hungary, with the aim of mutual military assistance in the case of an attack from Russia, which was not satisfied with the agreement reached at the Congress of Berlin.

In the Eastern crisis of the 1870s, fear of a repetition of this turn of events would later be a factor in Bismarck's signing the Dual Alliance with Austria-Hungary in 1879.

In 1879 the influence of the Northern Alliance made itself felt in Parker County, Texas when a new group was established there by a former member of the Lampasas County Alliance group.

He was the author of The Elements of French Literature, 1879 ; founder and president of the Alliance Française ; a member of the Société de Linguistique de Paris ; and, as an Officier d ' Académie, was a recipient of the Palmes académiques.

The Dual Alliance persisted throughout the war and ended with their defeats in 1918.

The establishment of the Dual Alliance led Russia to take a more conciliatory stance, and in 1887, the so-called Reinsurance Treaty was signed between Germany and Russia: in it, the two powers agreed on mutual military support in the case that France attacked Germany, or in case of an Austrian attack on Russia.

In 1882, Italy joined the Dual Alliance to form a Triple Alliance.

But Russia did form a closer relationship with France in the Dual Alliance of 1894, since both were worried about the possibilities of German aggression.

The League of the Three Emperors having fallen apart, Bismarck negotiated the Dual Alliance with Austria-Hungary, in which each guaranteed the other against Russian attack.

He also negotiated the Triple Alliance in 1882 with Austria-Hungary and Italy ; this was a completely different Alliance to the Dual Alliance.

After the dismissal of Bismarck, his successor Kaiser Wilhelm II felt unable to obtain success in keeping this policy, while the German Foreign Office under Friedrich von Holstein had already prepared a renunciation toward the Dual Alliance with Austria – Hungary.
