William H. Bonney ( born William Henry McCarty, Jr. c. November 23, 1859 – c. July 14, 1881 ), better known as Billy the Kid but also known as Henry Antrim, was a 19th-century American gunman who participated in the Lincoln County War and became a frontier outlaw in the American Old West.

Relatively unknown during most of his lifetime, Billy was catapulted into legend in 1881 when New Mexico's governor, Lew Wallace, placed a price on his head.

In 1949, a paralegal named William Morrison located a man in Central Texas named Ollie Partridge Roberts ( nicknamed Brushy Bill ), who claimed to be Billy the Kid and challenged the popular account of McCarty as shot to death by Pat Garrett in 1881.

A one-foot length was cut off and hammered onto the longer piece to form a cross, and the words " Billy The Kid ( Bonney ) July 14, 1881 " were placed on the horizontal crosspiece.

The film opens in 1950 with a young attorney talking to an elderly man named Brushy Bill Roberts, who claims that he is William H. Bonney ( aka Billy The Kid ), whom " everyone " knows to have been shot and killed by Pat Garrett in 1881.

Hines told Morrison of his experiences in the Lincoln County War with Billy the Kid who was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett on July 14, 1881, but he stunned Morrison by claiming that the Kid was still alive and living near Hamilton, Texas under the name Ollie P. Roberts ( nicknamed " Brushy Bill ").

Because Billy the Kid was about twenty-one at the time of his death in 1881, if either of the later two birth dates are true, then it would be impossible for Brushy Bill to have been the Kid.

On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid in this house, now referred to as the Maxwell House.

Eventually the sheriff Pat Garrett and his posse tracked down and killed O ' Folliard, Bowdre, and, in July 1881, the " Kid ".

Though he was convicted, the Kid managed to escape from the Lincoln County jail on April 28, 1881, after killing his guards, J. W. Bell and Bob Olinger.
