A decade and a half later, the Polish anthropology student, Bronisław Malinowski ( 1884 – 1942 ), was beginning what he expected to be a brief period of fieldwork in the old model, collecting lists of cultural items, when the outbreak of the First World War stranded him in New Guinea.

After MacDonald and Eddy left MGM in 1942, they appeared frequently on radio together while planning several unrealized films that would have reunited them onscreen.

His life and the sacrifices he made to keep going despite pain and impending death were the subject of the 1942 British film, The First of the Few produced and directed by Leslie Howard, with Howard in the starring role of R. J. Mitchell, and David Niven as ' Geoffrey Crisp ', based on the Supermarine test pilot Jeffrey Quill who flew the aerobatic sequences for the film in a Spitfire MkII.
