The Meat Puppets have influenced various rock bands such as Nirvana Dinosaur Jr, and Pavement.

Alternative rock bands from the Northeastern United States, including Sonic Youth, Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr., are important influences on the genre.

One such demonstration was at a concert with Dinosaur Jr. and Band of Susans at Leeds Poly ( UK ) on the 14th October 1988.

In 1993, the band was chosen to take part in that year's Lollapalooza tour, playing alongside such acts as Primus, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr. and Rage Against the Machine.

TV-69 featured many videos by punk and indie-label bands and had several locally produced videos (" Clone Love " by a local parody band, and a Dinosaur Jr song ).

The other band members went their own ways during the period of inactivity following Loveless: Butcher contributed vocals to Collapsed Lung's 1996 single " Board Game ", Googe had been sighted working as a cab driver in London and formed the supergroup Snowpony in 1996, O ' Ciosoig joined Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, while Shields collaborated with Yo La Tengo, Primal Scream, and Dinosaur Jr.

Allmusic identifies indie rock as including a number of styles that are: " too sensitive and melancholy ; too soft and delicate ; too dreamy and hypnotic ; too personal and intimately revealing in its lyrics ; too low-fidelity and low-budget in its production ; too angular in its melodies and riffs ; too raw, skronky and abrasive, wrapped in too many sheets of Sonic Youth / Dinosaur Jr ./ Pixies / Jesus & Mary Chain-style guitar noise ; too oblique and fractured in its song structures ; too influenced by experimental or otherwise unpopular musical styles.

In the United States, the term was particularly associated with the abrasive, distortion-heavy sounds of the Pixies, Hüsker Dü, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., and The Replacements.

The Mary Chain, along with Dinosaur Jr, indie pop and the dream pop of Cocteau Twins, were the formative influences for the shoegazing movement of the late 1980s.

They are often credited with taking the first steps toward popularizing grunge music, and have continued to achieve critical and commercial success in the new millennium, with popular bands such as Fleet Foxes, Dinosaur Jr., Foals, Beach House, The Postal Service, Flight of the Conchords, No Age, Wolf Parade and The Shins on their roster.

Mindful that garnering the attention of the American mainstream music press was difficult for all but the largest indie label, Pavitt and Ponemen took inspiration from alternative bands like Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, and Dinosaur Jr. and sought to publicize the label via the British music press.

In 2000, indie rock veterans J Mascis ( of Dinosaur Jr ) and Mike Watt ( of the Minutemen and fIREHOSE ) teamed up with the Asheton brothers to perform Stooges covers ( and other material ) live.

As many of the bands on the label sought to expand beyond the limitations of the hardcore genre, SST released many key albums that were instrumental in the development of American alternative rock, including releases by the Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, the Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr. After a peak release schedule in the late 1980s, SST began venturing into jazz releases.

Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and the Meat Puppets have reclaimed the rights to the SST material after leaving the label.

The label replaced these bands with new signings Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, and Bad Brains.

Sonic Youth mentioned SST often in interviews and in music writer Michael Azerrad's estimation, " seemed to be actively campaigning to get signed to the indie powerhouse "; in turn, Sonic Youth was instrumental in getting SST to sign Dinosaur Jr. Gerard Cosloy, owner of Dinosaur Jr's previous label Homestead Records, said, " SST was the label everyone wanted to be on.

Dinosaur Jr left SST for Blanco y Negro Records in 1990.

Initially unable to play his bass, he rebuilt his strength with intense woodshedding and practice as well as live club gigs where he performed sets of Stooges covers with Hellride in California and with J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr. drummer Murph in New York under the name Hellride East.

During this time the configuration experienced a renaissance of sorts with groups such as Nirvana, Silverchair, Meat Puppets, Violent Femmes, Babes in Toyland, Primus, Hüsker Dü ( and spin off bands Nova Mob and Sugar ), Walt Mink, the Minutemen, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Melvins, Fudge Tunnel, Galaxie 500, DC3, Nomeansno, The Presidents of the United States of America, Low, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Killdozer, Cosmic Psychos, Therapy ?, Placebo, Jawbreaker, Bratmobile, Sleater-Kinney, the Screaming Blue Messiahs, Gov't Mule, Morphine ( bass, sax and drums ) and Ben Folds Five ( piano, bass and drums ).

Josh Brigham, one of the guitarists and the only founding member remaining during the recording of the album, has said: " Our music has always been spacey and heavy, and we use those roots, combined with our love of grunge-era Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr., HUM, and Pixies, we add some bigger, heavier riffs.

But common musical threads between the different bands include garage rock, ' 60s psych, and American indie bands like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr.

Michael Azerrad's book Our Band Could Be Your Life cites an early 1990s Dinosaur Jr. tour of the United Kingdom as a key influence.

While not classified as a shoegazing band, Dinosaur Jr. did share a tendency to blend poppy melody with loud guitars and laconic vocals.

In 1993, Del collaborated with the band, Dinosaur Jr., to create the song, " Missing Link ", featured on the Judgment Night ( soundtrack ).

While Sonic Youth is the focus of the documentary, the film also gives attention to Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland, Gumball and The Ramones.

Early American alternative rock bands like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., who mixed rock song structures with guitar distortion, were immediate forerunners.

Many sitcom television series in particular had characters going to movies titled I Was a Teenage Dinosaur, Monster, etc., and it was often referenced in monologues by comedians and bits by disc jockeys.

All were veterans of other musical outfits ; Donna Dresch had previously played and recorded with such bands as Dinosaur Jr., Dangermouse, Screaming Trees, Rastro !, Fifth Column, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Lois, Mary Lou Lord and The Go Team ; Jody Bleyle was simultaneously in the bands Hazel and Lovebutt while playing in Team Dresch ; Kaia Wilson had been in the band Adickdid and Marci Martinez in Calamity Jane.

A tribute album entitled Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy was released on September 15, 2009, featuring contributions from Thom Yorke, Frank Black, The National, Dinosaur Jr., Michael Stipe, Juliana Hatfield, Mercury Rev, David Berkeley, Frank Turner.
