Fort and Schuyler
The state's Maritime College in Fort Schuyler ( on the southeastern shore ) houses the Maritime Industry Museum.
When Burgoyne's army approached, and General Schuyler with his forces fell back from Fort Edward to the Islands at the mouth of the Mohawk, the people on this side of the Hudson took refuge in Lansingburgh.
The region was settled in 1691 and called Fort Saratoga by Dutch settlers from Albany, NY, notably the Schuyler family.
The retreat from Quebec to Fort Ticonderoga also brought Gates into conflict with the authority of Major General Philip Schuyler, commander of the army's Northern Department, which retained jurisdiction over Ticonderoga.
But in 1777, Congress blamed Schuyler and St. Clair for the loss of Fort Ticonderoga, though Gates had exercised a lengthy command in the region.
