The Albula Line became a UNESCO world heritage as did the Bernina Railway, the highest and only railway to cross the alps without the use of a tunnel at the pass.

Three World Heritage Sites are located in the canton: the Benedictine Convent of Saint John, the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona and the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula and Bernina Landscapes.

In 2008 the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes ( the part from Thusis to Tirano, including St. Moritz ) was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The legendary king Tiberinus Silvius, or Thebris, ninth in the king-list of Alba Longa, was said to have drowned in the Albula River, which was subsequently renamed in his honour.

The only tradition specifically attached to Tiberinus is that he was drowned while crossing the river then known as the Albula, but which was ever after known to the Latins as the Tiber.

It is a tributary of the Albula river, which it meets in Tiefencastel.

The divide continues northwards along the Albula Alps to Julier Pass, Albula Pass and Flüela Pass south of Davos between the catchment area of the Rhine, which empties into the North Sea via the Netherlands, and the Danube, which flows eastward emptying into the Black Sea.

The Pacific Railway Acts of 1862 and 1864 granted federal support for the construction of the United States ' First Transcontinental Railroad, which was completed in 1869.

Agriculture in the Annapolis valley boomed in the late 19th century with the arrival of the Windsor and Annapolis Railway, later the Dominion Atlantic Railway, which developed large export markets for Annapolis Valley apples.

From 1882 the village was served by Aberfoyle railway station, the terminus of the Strathendrick and Aberfoyle Railway which connected to Glasgow via Dumbarton or Kirkintilloch The station closed to passenger traffic in 1951, and the remaining freight services ceased in 1959.

Alexandria is served by the Norfolk & Southern Railway with a connector which allows rail traffic to flow smoothly between lines servicing east – west and north – south destinations.

Mumbai Suburban Railway, the oldest suburban rail system in Asia, ‎ carries more than 6. 9 million commuters on a daily basis which constitutes more than half of the total daily passenger capacity of the Indian Railways itself.

The peak and statue can be accessed via a narrow road or by the 3. 8 kilometre ( 2. 4 mi ) Corcovado Rack Railway which was opened in 1884 and refurbished in 1980.

Rail service is provided by the city-owned Columbia Terminal ( COLT ) Railroad, which runs from the north side of Columbia to Centralia and a connection to the Norfolk Southern Railway.

The first cable-operated railway, employing a moving rope and iron claws on the cars, was the London and Blackwall Railway, which opened in east London, England, in 1840.

Though there may have been earlier attempts to pull cars by endless ropes, the first cable car installation in operation was the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway in New York City, which ran from 1 July 1868 to 1870.

In 1883 the New York and Brooklyn Bridge Railway was opened, which had a most curious feature: though it was a cable car system, it used steam locomotives to get the cars into and out of the terminals.

The railway terminated at a station called " Kingswear for Dartmouth " ( now on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway ) and a ferry took passengers across the river to the station at Dartmouth railway station, which had a dedicated pontoon.

The town is also served by Dachau Stadt Railway Station which serves the local A line with the rural vicinity.

Greenwich Mean Time was adopted across the island of Great Britain by the Railway Clearing House in 1847, and by almost all railway companies by the following year, from which the term " railway time " is derived.

Available for purchase in every station of the Mass Transit Railway system, the Octopus card is a non-touch payment system which allows payment for not only public transport ( such as trains, buses, trams, ferries and minibuses ), but also at parking meters, convenience stores, supermarkets, fast-food restaurants and most vending machines.

A funfair ( Funland ) situated at Beachlands, is open year round, as is the East Hayling Light Railway which runs from the funfair to Eastoke corner.

On 1 November 2005, the Irish government published the Transport 21 plan which includes € 18bn for improved roads and € 16bn for improved rail, including the Western Railway Corridor and the Dublin Metro.

There is a campaign to bring some closed lines back into service, in particular the Limerick-Sligo line ( the Western Railway Corridor ), to facilitate economic regeneration in the west, which has lagged behind the rest of the country.

The Highbridge branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway ran through the farm on an embankment, but was dismantled in 1966 and now forms a main thoroughfare across the site.

The village expanded rapidly between 1923 and 1939 when a series of garden estates – encouraged by the Metropolitan Railway – grew around its historic core, and it was largely from this time onwards that the area ( including Hatch End, which forms the northeastern part of Pinner ) assumed much of its present-day suburban character.

Today it forms part of the Sea to Sea Cycle Route which crosses from Whitehaven or Workington on the west coast to Sunderland or Tynemouth on the east coast-for three miles between Keswick and Threlkeld it follows the Keswick Railway Footpath along the disused track and bridges of the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway as laid out by Bouch.

Tokorozawa houses the headquarters of Seibu Railway and its parent company Seibu Holdings, and Tokorozawa Station forms a hub in the Seibu Railway network which serves western Tokyo and southern Saitama.

First the Dunstable Branch of the Great Northern Railway passed through the Batford area with a station later named Harpenden East railway station ( this line is now closed and forms a cycle track ).

The Odakyu Electric Railway forms the core of the Odakyu Group, which comprises 106 companies ( as of January 2010 ) and includes the Enoshima Electric Railway, Hakone Tozan Railway, Odakyu Bus, Odakyu Department Store, and Hyatt Regency Tokyo hotel.

The town is also served by Castletown Railway Station which forms part of the sole remaining section of the Isle of Man Railway, a 3 ft narrow gauge steam-operated railway from Douglas to Port Erin.

The railway station in the village forms the western terminus of the Isle of Man Railway which sits in the centre of the village.

Railway electrification has many advantages over alternative forms of traction, but it requires significant capital expenditure for installation.

West of Jasper, CN's main line swings south on the former Canadian Northern Railway ( CNoR ) to Vancouver, however the GTPR line to Prince Rupert forms an important CN secondary main line.

The Quintinshill rail disaster occurred on 22 May 1915 in Scotland near Gretna Green at Quintinshill, an intermediate signal box with sidings on each side on the Caledonian Railway Main Line linking Glasgow and Carlisle ( the line now forms part of the West Coast Main Line ).

An important U. S. subsidiary of CNoR, the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway, forms part of a key CN connection between Chicago and Winnipeg.

He also secured construction of a railroad through his home county, which now forms part of the Norfolk and Western Railway.

The area is now the location of Blackfriars station, and forms the northern bridge-head for both Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge.

Langensteinbach, Spielberg and Ittersbach are all connected to each other and to the cities of Karlsruhe and Ettlingen among others by the Busenbach – Ittersbach branch of the Alb Valley Railway ( Albtalbahn ), an electric railway that forms part of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn.
