Justina and her son fled ; but Ambrose remained at his post, and did good service to many of the sufferers by causing the plate of the church to be melted for their relief.

Theodosius was threatened with excommunication by Ambrose for the massacre of 7, 000 persons at Thessalonica in 390, after the murder of the Roman governor there by rioters.

Soon after acquiring the undisputed possession of the Roman empire, Theodosius died at Milan in 395, and two years later ( April 4, 397 ) Ambrose also died.

The following day, Thomas Wintour, Ambrose Rookwood, Robert Keyes, and Guy Fawkes were hanged, drawn and quartered, opposite the building they had planned to blow up, in the Old Palace Yard at Westminster.

He was Pylades to William Charles Macready's Orestes in Ambrose Philips's Distressed Mother when Macready made his first appearance at that theatre ( 1816 ).

During the second half of the fourth century, Saint Ambrose, as bishop of Milan, had a strong influence on the layout of the city, redesigning the centre ( although the cathedral and baptistery built at this time are now lost ) and building the great basilicas at the city gates: Sant ' Ambrogio, San Nazaro in Brolo, San Simpliciano and Sant ' Eustorgio, which still stand, refurbished over the centuries, as some of the finest and most important churches in Milan.

In December 1862, Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside commanded the Army of the Potomac and attempted to reach Richmond by way of Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he was defeated at the Battle of Fredericksburg.

In 1132-34, two Augustinian canons of Ratisbon, Paul, said by Bäumer to be Paul of Bernried, and Gebehard, held a correspondence ( printed by Mabillon in his " Musæum Italicum " from the originals in the Cathedral Library at Milan ) with Anselm, Archbishop of Milan, and Martin, treasurer of St. Ambrose, with a view of obtaining copies of the books of the Ambrosian Rite, so that they might introduce it into their church.

Ambrose attended Liberty Seminary as a young boy, but his education was interrupted when his mother died in 1841 ; he was apprenticed to a local tailor, eventually becoming a partner in the business.
