The Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals is part of the Antarctic Treaty System.
Abbreviated as the " Antarctic Seals " agreement, the convention had the objective to promote and achieve the protection, scientific study, and rational use of Antarctic seals, and to maintain a satisfactory balance within the ecological system of Antarctica.
Antarctic krill is the keystone species of the ecosystem of the Southern Ocean, and is an important food organism for whales, seals, Leopard Seals, fur seals, Crabeater Seals, squid, icefish, penguins, albatrosses and many other birds.
The species is still protected by the governments in whose waters it resides ( Australia, South Africa, France ) and by the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals in waters south of 60 ° S. The animal is also listed in Appendix 2 of CITES.
Populations are recovering rapidly, though, in most areas whilst under the protection of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals.
