Perry announced his departure from 4AD in September 2008, and promised a new album titled Ark in early 2009.

Perry expanded the group to a trio with the addition of Burnett, this line-up recording the classic roots reggae album Heart of the Congos in 1977 at Perry's Black Ark studio.

Perry's previous productions by Max Romeo and Junior Murvin had been huge commercial successes thanks to a deal with Island Records, but Perry was in dispute with Island at the time the Congos ' album was finished, so it was released on his own Black Ark label, limiting its success overseas, and causing a rift with the group.

In 2009, Myton, Burnett, and Johnson reunited with Perry to record the album Back in the Black Ark, which, despite its title, was recorded at Myton's studio in Portmore and at Mixing Lab, Kingston.

The Black Ark was the recording studio of reggae and dub producer Lee " Scratch " Perry, built in 1973 and located behind his family's home in the Washington Gardens neighborhood of Kingston, Jamaica.

Perry once buried microphones at the base of a palm tree and thumped it rhythmically to produce a mystifying bass drum effect and his drum booth at the Black Ark was for a time surrounded with chicken wire to further his distinctive sound.

In 1979, following years of increasingly bizarre and erratic behavior, Lee " Scratch " Perry, armed with a magic marker, covered every available surface of the Black Ark with impenetrable writings before allegedly burning it to the ground.

More often than not, Perry has claimed that he personally destroyed the Black Ark due to " unclean spirits "-an allusion to some of the undesirable people who were constantly at the Black Ark in later years.

The Heart of Gold and " B Ark " models were built by Perry Brahan.

The album was originally released in Jamaica in 1978 and was the last album by The Upsetters to be released before Perry closed down his Black Ark studio.
