Torah scrolls are stored in the holiest part of the synagogue in the Ark known as the " Holy Ark " ( aron hakodesh in Hebrew.

At other times, it is stored in the holiest spot within a synagogue, the Aron Kodesh (" Holy Ark "), which is usually an ornate curtained-off cabinet or section of the synagogue built along the wall that most closely faces Jerusalem, the direction Jews face when praying.

The Holy Ark is usually found in the front of the sanctuary, and is a central element of synagogue architecture.

The most common general plan for the interior of the synagogue is an Ark at the eastern end opposite the entrance, and with an almemar or pulpit.
