The life of each of the Blackadders is also entwined with their servant, all from the Baldrick family line ( played by Tony Robinson ).

Each Blackadder and Baldrick is also saddled with the company of a dim-witted aristocrat whose presence Blackadder must somehow tolerate.

Blackadder is joined by his batman Private S. Baldrick ( Tony Robinson ) and idealistic Edwardian twit Lieutenant George ( Hugh Laurie ).

For example, Baldrick is reduced to making coffee from mud and cooking rats, while General Melchett hatches a plan for the troops to walk very slowly toward the German lines, because " it'll be the last thing Fritz will expect.

The final episode of this series, " Goodbyeee ", is known for being extraordinarily poignant for a comedy – especially the final scene, which sees the main characters ( Blackadder, Baldrick, George, and Darling ) finally going " over the top " and charging off into the fog and smoke of no man's land to presumably die.

Baldrick is played not by Tony Robinson, but by Philip Fox.

However, due to a misunderstanding between Oliver Cromwell ( guest-star Warren Clarke ) and Baldrick, the king is arrested and sent to the Tower of London.

While this is intended as a clever con trick, the machine, surprisingly, works, sending Blackadder and Baldrick back to the time of the dinosaurs, where they manage to cause the extinction of the dinosaurs, through the use of Baldrick's best, worst and only pair of underpants as a weapon against a hungry T. Rex.

He is known for playing Baldrick in the BBC television series Blackadder and for hosting Channel 4 programmes such as Time Team and The Worst Jobs in History.

Most, such as his repulsive manservant Baldrick and the various imbecilic aristocrats with whose company he is lumbered ( such as Lord Percy Percy or George ), are usually hindrances to him of whom he is repeatedly incapable of ridding himself.

The Prince does show wit on occasion and is creatively insulting, although, with the exception of Baldrick and Percy, it is usually once his target is out of sight.

He intends to play a turn-of-the-millennium-prank on his friends by claiming that he has a time machine-only to be unpleasantly surprised that the device that Baldrick has actually built ( following Leonardo da Vinci's instructions to the letter, except for marking values on the instrument display ) actually is a working time machine.

The name ' Baldrick ' is also authentic – but much rarer – and has been dated in Britain all the way back to the Norman Conquest of 1066.

He is assisted in his every scheme by his henchmen and only friends, Baldrick ( Tony Robinson ) and Lord Percy Percy ( Tim McInnerny ).

He does, however, show many traits very similar to his later versions: his " cunning plans " are cunning but rarely work, he makes Baldrick do his dirty work, he despises Lord Percy, he is a schemer, he is creatively insulting, and, most noticeably, he is foolhardy and cowardly at the same time.

Finding her grossly unattractive, Edmund tries to get out of the marriage — firstly by pretending to be gay and dressing like the Earl of Doncaster, then by attempting to marry Talley Applebottom, a random peasant woman, which fails when her husband turns up at the ceremony, and then by having Baldrick surreptitiously sleep with the lascivious Infanta so that she is not a virgin.

Edmund, Percy, and Baldrick are set to be burnt at the stake, but are saved by Edmund's mother, the Queen, who is secretly an actual witch, and who also causes the death of the Witchsmeller.

Edmund is accompanied by the increasingly stupid, " bottom-breathed " Baldrick and " bird-brained " Lord Percy, who is as much of a simpleton as his ancestor.

Sir Edmund Blackadder and his servant, Baldrick, are the last two men loyal to the defeated King Charles I of England ( played by Stephen Fry, portrayed as a soft-spoken, ineffective, slightly dim character, with the voice and mannerisms of Charles I's namesake, the current Prince of Wales ).

In a 2005 BBC documentary series showcasing some of Britain's favourite sitcoms, The Blackadder edition of the series, presented by John Sergeant, revealed that the original ending of this series had Baldrick, George, Darling and the troops under Blackadder's command unambiguously killed.

* In the 1999 comedy Blackadder: Back & Forth, Lord Blackadder ( Rowan Atkinson ) subjects Baldrick ( Tony Robinson ) to dunking in a toilet so that he can experience a near-death life review to recover details neither of them can remember.

Later series ( Blackadder II, Blackadder the Third, Blackadder Goes Forth ) moved the duo through history and switched the relationship: the Edmund Blackadder of Blackadder II was a brilliant schemer, whereas Baldrick had devolved into a buffoon whose catchphrase was " I have a cunning plan " ( which he rarely had ).

Using this premise, the series follows the fictitious reign of Richard IV ( 1485 – 98 ) through the experiences of Prince Edmund, who styles himself as " The Black Adder ", and his two sidekicks: the imbecilic Lord Percy Percy, the Duke of Northumberland ( Tim McInnerny ); and Baldrick ( Tony Robinson ), a more intelligent servant of no status.

In following series, descendants of Percy and Baldrick continue to appear as characters closely associated with the Blackadders.

All television programme episodes starred Rowan Atkinson as anti-hero Edmund Blackadder and Tony Robinson as Blackadder's dogsbody, Baldrick.

The Spirit of Christmas shows Blackadder the contrary antics of his ancestors and descendants, and reluctantly informs him that if he turns evil his descendants will enjoy power and fortune, while if he remains the same a future Blackadder will live shamefully subjugated to a future incompetent Baldrick.

Robinson came to prominence in 1983 for his role in the British historical sitcom Blackadder, as Edmund Blackadder's dogsbody Baldrick.

In the millennium special Blackadder: Back & Forth ( 1999 ), a time traveling Blackadder and Baldrick arrive in the Elizabethan Age and are confronted by Queenie ( Richardson ), Melchet, and Nursie.

At the same time, Baldrick thinks that he himself would be played by " some tiny tit in a beard " ( even though this incarnation of Baldrick does not have a beard ).

Edmund, Percy and Baldrick take the fight into a nunnery and, by twisting the truth when the outraged Mother Superior finds them, Edmund manipulates her into writing to the Vatican and terminating his hated episcopal career.

Baldrick, by this stage, has lost whatever cunning his ancestors once had, and reached a level of childlike stupidity that is familiar to most viewers.

After Baldrick and Blackadder are shot down and captured by the Imperial German Army, Flashheart and Lieutenant George mount a rescue mission.

Upon arrival in London, she disguises herself as a man and is hired by Lord Blackadder while his manservant ; he casually kicks Baldrick out onto the streets.

The wedding is due to be officiated by Lord Melchett, with Baldrick acting as bridesmaid ( Kate doesn't have any girl-chums, as her family is too poor to afford friends ).

Val is assisted by the human employee Baldrick.

However, he learns to his surprise that the machine, built by Baldrick after plans by Leonardo Da Vinci, actually works.

Finding that Baldrick has forgotten to write dates on the machine's dials, the rest of the film follows their attempts to find their way back to 1999, often creating huge historical anomalies in the process which must be corrected before the end.

He later puts history back on track but a few minutes before the credits he makes himself King of England / King Edmund III, marries Maid Marion of Sherwood and makes Baldrick prime minister ( notably dissolving Parliament and controlling Baldrick as always.

About the same time, Baldrick, archbishop of Dol, also basing his account generally on Gesta Francorum, focused on the offenses of the Muslims and the reconquest of the Holy Land in terms likely to appeal to chivalry.

Baldrick asserts that Urban, there on the spot, appointed the bishop of Puy to lead the crusade.
